Journal ArticleDOI

Water ice and organics on the surface of the asteroid 24 Themis

TL;DR: Infrared spectra of the asteroid 24 Themis show that ice and organic compounds are not only present on its surface but also prevalent, and their identification agrees with independent results that rule out other compounds as possible sources of the observed spectral structure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Deep Impact: Observations from a worldwide Earth-based campaign

Karen J. Meech, +208 more
- 14 Oct 2005 -
TL;DR: Data show that there was new material after impact that was compositionally different from that seen before impact, and the ratio of dust mass to gas mass in the ejecta was much larger than before impact.
Journal ArticleDOI

The methane ice rich surface of large TNO 2005 FY9: a Pluto-twin in the trans-neptunian belt?

TL;DR: In this article, the surface composition of the recently discovered TNO 2005 FY 9, one of the largest known TNOs (∼0.7 times the diameter of Pluto, i.e., 1600 km, if the albedo is similar, or 3100-1550 km in diameter assuming an albedos range 0.2 < p v < 0.8).
Journal ArticleDOI

Albedo and atmospheric constraints of dwarf planet Makemake from a stellar occultation

TL;DR: The disappearances and reappearances of the star were abrupt, showing that Makemake has no global Pluto-like atmosphere at an upper limit of 4–12 nanobar (1σ) for the surface pressure, although a localized atmosphere is possible.
