Journal ArticleDOI
Temporal changes in nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 1 genotypes in healthy Gambians before and after the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
Chinelo Ebruke,Anna Roca,Uzochukwu Egere,Ousainou Darboe,Philip C. Hill,Brian Greenwood,Brendan W. Wren,Richard A. Adegbola,Martin Antonio +8 more
TL;DR: Emergence of ST3081 and concomitant disappearance of ST618 may suggest a change in the molecular epidemiology of pneumococcal serotype 1 in this region, but this change is not likely to be associated with the introduction of PCV-7 which lacks serotypes 1.
Posted ContentDOI
Genomic diversity of Escherichia coli isolates from backyard chickens and guinea fowl in the Gambia
Ebenezer Foster-Nyarko,Ebenezer Foster-Nyarko,Nabil-Fareed Alikhan,Anuradha Ravi,Nicholas M. Thomson,Sheikh Jarju,Brenda Kwambana-Adams,Brenda Kwambana-Adams,Arss Secka,Justin O'Grady,Martin Antonio,Martin Antonio,Mark J. Pallen,Mark J. Pallen +13 more
TL;DR: The genomic diversity of E. coli in backyard poultry from rural Gambia is investigated to contextualise the potential risks of transmission of bacterial strains between humans and rural backyard poultry and suggest strains can be exchanged between poultry and livestock in this setting.
Posted ContentDOI
High burden and seasonal variation of paediatric scabies and pyoderma prevalence in The Gambia: a cross-sectional study
Edwin P. Armitage,Elina Senghore,Saffiatou Darboe,Momodou Barry,Janko Camara,Sulayman Bah,Michael Marks,Carla Cerami,Anna Roca,Martin Antonio,Claire E. Turner,Thushan I de Silva,Thushan I de Silva +12 more
TL;DR: High prevalence of scabies and pyoderma and fungal infections in children <5 years of 15.9%, 17.4% and 9.7% respectively, with increased bacterial skin infections in the rainy season are revealed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative Genomic Analysis and In Vivo Modeling of Streptococcus pneumoniae ST3081 and ST618 Isolates Reveal Key Genetic and Phenotypic Differences Contributing to Clonal Replacement of Serotype 1 in The Gambia.
Laura Bricio-Moreno,Chinelo Ebruke,Chinelo Ebruke,Chrispin Chaguza,Chrispin Chaguza,Jennifer E. Cornick,Jennifer E. Cornick,Brenda Kwambana-Adams,Brenda Kwambana-Adams,Marie Yang,Grant A. Mackenzie,Grant A. Mackenzie,Brendan W. Wren,Dean Everett,Dean Everett,Martin Antonio,Martin Antonio,Martin Antonio,Aras Kadioglu +18 more
TL;DR: Important evidence is provided to show that changes in the epidemiology of pneumococcal serotype 1 sequence types in The Gambia may be a direct consequence of differences in virulence and increased ability to colonize hosts over time.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population genetic analyses of Helicobacter pylori isolates from Gambian adults and children.
Ousman Secka,Yoshan Moodley,Martin Antonio,Douglas E. Berg,Douglas E. Berg,Mary Tapgun,Robert Walton,Archibald Worwui,Vivat Thomas,Tumani Corrah,Julian Thomas,Richard A. Adegbola +11 more
TL;DR: STRUCTURE analysis of the sequence data indicated that Gambian H. pylori strains belong to the hspWAfrica subpopulation of hpAfrica1, in accord with Gambia's West African location.
