Transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Rural Gambian Villages: A Longitudinal Study
Philip C. Hill,John Townend,Martin Antonio,Biodun Akisanya,Chinelo Ebruke,George Lahai,Brian Greenwood,Richard A. Adegbola,Richard A. Adegbola +8 more
TL;DR: This longitudinal carriage study in Gambian villages provides unique information on the pattern of spread of S. pneumoniae in rural Africa and a baseline for evaluating the impact of the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine into the region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pre-vaccination nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage in a Nigerian population: epidemiology and population biology.
Ifedayo M. O. Adetifa,Martin Antonio,Christy A. N. Okoromah,Chinelo Ebruke,Victor Inem,David Nsekpong,Abdoulie Bojang,Richard A. Adegbola +7 more
TL;DR: Based on the coverage of serotypes in this study, PCV-13 is the obvious choice to reduce disease burden and prevalence of drug resistant pneumococci, however, its use will require careful monitoring.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on pneumonia in The Gambia: population-based surveillance and case-control studies.
Grant A. Mackenzie,Grant A. Mackenzie,Philip C. Hill,Shah M Sahito,David Jeffries,Ilias Hossain,Christian Bottomley,Uchendu Uchendu,David Ameh,Malick Ndiaye,Chidebereh D Osuorah,Oyedeji Adeyemi,Jayani Pathirana,Yekini Olatunji,Bade Abatan,Ebirim Ahameefula,Bilquees S Muhammad,Augustin E Fombah,Debasish Saha,Roslyn Mackenzie,Ian D. Levine,Stephen R. C. Howie,Stephen R. C. Howie,Stephen R. C. Howie,Richard A. Adegbola,Brian Greenwood,Tumani Corrah +51 more
TL;DR: The introduction of PCV in The Gambia was associated with a moderate impact on the incidence of radiological pneumonia, a small reduction in cases of hospitalised pneumonia, and substantial reductions of pneumococcal and hypoxic pneumonia in young children.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mitchell +88 more
TL;DR: Upper airway pneumococcal colonization density among children hospitalized with World Health Organization–defined pneumonia was associated with microbiologically confirmed pneumococCal pneumonia (MCPP) and the optimal colonization density threshold was ≥7 log10 copies/mL.
Journal ArticleDOI
Variation at the capsule locus, cps, of mistyped and non-typable Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates.
Susannah J. Salter,Jason Hinds,Katherine A. Gould,Lotte Lambertsen,William P. Hanage,Martin Antonio,Paul Turner,Peter W. M. Hermans,Hester J. Bootsma,Katherine L. O'Brien,Stephen D. Bentley +10 more
TL;DR: The capsule polysaccharide locus (cps) is the site of the capsule biosynthesis gene cluster in encapsulated Streptococcus pneumoniae as mentioned in this paper, which is crucial to the antigenic diversity of the pathogen and current vaccine strategies.
