Phylotranscriptomic analysis of the origin and early diversification of land plants
Norman J. Wickett,Siavash Mirarab,Nam Nguyen,Tandy Warnow,Eric J. Carpenter,Naim Matasci,Saravanaraj Ayyampalayam,Michael S. Barker,J. Gordon Burleigh,Matthew A. Gitzendanner,Brad R. Ruhfel,Brad R. Ruhfel,Eric K. Wafula,Joshua P. Der,Sean W. Graham,Sarah Mathews,Michael Melkonian,Douglas E. Soltis,Douglas E. Soltis,Pamela S. Soltis,Pamela S. Soltis,Nicholas W. Miles,Carl J. Rothfels,Carl J. Stevenson,Barbara Surek,Juan Carlos Villarreal,Béatrice Roure,Hervé Philippe,Hervé Philippe,Claude W. dePamphilis,Tao Chen,Michael K. Deyholos,Regina S. Baucom,Toni M. Kutchan,Megan M. Augustin,Jun Wang,Yong Zhang,Zhijian Tian,Zhixiang Yan,Xiaolei Wu,Xiao Sun,Gane Ka-Shu Wong,Jim Leebens-Mack +47 more
TL;DR: Strong and robust support is found for a sister-group relationship between land plants and one group of streptophyte green algae, the Zygnematophyceae, and suggests that phylogenetic hypotheses used to understand the evolution of fundamental plant traits should be reevaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of a Camelina sativa Spring Panel.
Zinan Luo,Jordan R. Brock,John M. Dyer,Toni M. Kutchan,Daniel P. Schachtman,Megan M. Augustin,Yufeng Ge,Noah Fahlgren,Hussein Abdel-Haleem +8 more
TL;DR: Findings provide important information for future allele/gene identification using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and marker-assisted selection (MAS) to enhance genetic gain in C. sativa breeding programs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cloning and characterization of a norbelladine 4'-O-methyltransferase involved in the biosynthesis of the Alzheimer's drug galanthamine in Narcissus sp. aff. pseudonarcissus.
Matthew B. Kilgore,Megan M. Augustin,Courtney M. Starks,Mark O’Neil-Johnson,Gregory D. May,John A. Crow,Toni M. Kutchan +6 more
TL;DR: A new bioinformatic approach using several recent technological improvements was applied to search for genes in the proposed galanthamine biosynthetic pathway, first targeting methyltransferases due to strong signature amino acid sequences in the proteins.
Journal ArticleDOI
Elucidating steroid alkaloid biosynthesis in Veratrum californicum: production of verazine in Sf9 cells.
Megan M. Augustin,Dan R. Ruzicka,Dan R. Ruzicka,Ashutosh K. Shukla,Ashutosh K. Shukla,Jörg M. Augustin,Courtney M. Starks,Mark O’Neil-Johnson,Michael R. McKain,Bradley S. Evans,Matthew D. Barrett,Matthew D. Barrett,Ann Smithson,Ann Smithson,Gane Ka-Shu Wong,Michael K. Deyholos,Patrick P. Edger,Patrick P. Edger,J. Chris Pires,James H. Leebens-Mack,David A. Mann,Toni M. Kutchan +21 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the biosynthetic pathway to cyclopamine, a steroid alkaloid that shows promising antineoplastic activities, led to discovery of four enzymes that catalyze the first six steps in steroid alkAloid biosynthesis to produce verazine, a predicted precursor to cyclobutyrate.
Journal ArticleDOI
CYP96T1 of Narcissus sp. aff. pseudonarcissus Catalyzes Formation of the Para-Para' C-C Phenol Couple in the Amaryllidaceae Alkaloids
TL;DR: The discovery of CYP96T1 is of special interest because it catalyzes the first major branch in Amaryllidaceae alkaloid biosynthesis and is also the first phenol-coupling enzyme characterized from a monocot.
