Augustin,Jun Wang,Yong Zhang,Zhijian Tian,Zhixiang Yan,Xiaolei Wu,Xiao Sun,Gane Ka-Shu Wong,Jim Leebens-Mack +47 more
TL;DR: Strong and robust support is found for a sister-group relationship between land plants and one group of streptophyte green algae, the Zygnematophyceae, and suggests that phylogenetic hypotheses used to understand the evolution of fundamental plant traits should be reevaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Deyholos,Ram Samudrala,Zhijian Tian,Xiaolei Wu,Xiao Sun,Yong Zhang,Jun Wang,Jim Leebens-Mack,Gane Ka-Shu Wong,Gane Ka-Shu Wong +48 more
TL;DR: How to access the data used in a phylogenomics analysis of the first 85 species, and how to visualize the gene and species trees of the 1KP project.
Journal ArticleDOI
The evolutionary history of ferns inferred from 25 low-copy nuclear genes
Carl J. Rothfels,Fay-Wei Li,Erin M. Sigel,Layne Huiet,Anders Larsson,Dylan O. Burge,Markus Ruhsam,Michael K. Deyholos,Douglas E. Soltis,C. Neal Stewart,Shane W. Shaw,Lisa Pokorny,Tao Chen,Claude W. dePamphilis,Lisa DeGironimo,Li Chen,Xiaofeng Wei,Xiao Sun,Petra Korall,Dennis W. Stevenson,Sean W. Graham,Gane Ka-Shu Wong,Kathleen M. Pryer +22 more
TL;DR: A curated phylogenomics approach is taken to infer the first broad fern phylogeny from multiple nuclear loci, by combining broad taxon sampling with focused character sampling, along with rigorous alignment, orthology inference and model selection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Organellomic data sets confirm a cryptic consensus on (unrooted) land‐plant relationships and provide new insights into bryophyte molecular evolution
David Bell,Qianshi Lin,Wesley K. Gerelle,Steve Joya,Ying Chang,Ying Chang,Z. Nathan Taylor,Carl J. Rothfels,Anders Larsson,Juan Carlos Villarreal,Juan Carlos Villarreal,Fay-Wei Li,Fay-Wei Li,Lisa Pokorny,Péter Szövényi,Barbara Crandall-Stotler,Lisa DeGironimo,Sandra K. Floyd,David J. Beerling,Michael K. Deyholos,Matt Von Konrat,Shona Ellis,A. Jonathan Shaw,Tao Chen,Gane Ka-Shu Wong,Dennis W. Stevenson,Jeffrey D. Palmer,Sean W. Graham +27 more
TL;DR: A common unrooted tree underlies embryophyte phylogeny, [(liverworts, mosses), (hornwort, vascular plants)]; rooting inconsistency across studies likely reflects substantial distance to algal outgroups.
