TL;DR: It is shown that an abrupt five- to sixfold ploidy increase approximately 60 million years (Myr) ago, and allopolyploidy reuniting divergent Gossypium genomes approximately 1–2 Myr ago, conferred about 30–36-fold duplication of ancestral angiosperm genes in elite cottons, genetic complexity equalled only by Brassica among sequenced angiosperms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum genomes provide insights into the origin and evolution of allotetraploid cotton.
Yan Hu,Yan Hu,Jiedan Chen,Lei Fang,Lei Fang,Zhiyuan Zhang,Wei Ma,Yongchao Niu,Longzhen Ju,Jieqiong Deng,Ting Zhao,Ting Zhao,Jinmin Lian,Kobi Baruch,David D. Fang,Xia Liu,Yong-Ling Ruan,Yong-Ling Ruan,Mehboob-ur Rahman,Jinlei Han,Kai Wang,Qiong Wang,Huaitong Wu,Gaofu Mei,Yihao Zang,Zegang Han,Chenyu Xu,Weijuan Shen,Duofeng Yang,Zhanfeng Si,Fan Dai,Liangfeng Zou,Fei Huang,Bai Yulin,Yu-Gao Zhang,Avital Brodt,Hilla Ben-Hamo,Xiefei Zhu,Baoliang Zhou,Xueying Guan,Xueying Guan,Shuijin Zhu,Xiao-Ya Chen,Tianzhen Zhang,Tianzhen Zhang +44 more
TL;DR: High-quality de novo–assembled genomes of two cultivated allotetraploid cotton species and whole-genome comparative analyses provide insights into the evolution of cotton genomes and improvement of fiber quality and resilience to stress.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular strategies for improving waterlogging tolerance in plants
Elizabeth S. Dennis,Rudy Dolferus,M. H. Ellis,Mehboob-ur Rahman,Y. Wu,F. U. Hoeren,Anil Grover,Kathleen P. Ismond,Allen G. Good,William James Peacock +9 more
TL;DR: An account is presented of the molecular strategies that have been used in an attempt to increase flooding tolerance of crop plants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Estimation of genetic divergence among elite cotton cultivars: Genotypes by DNA fingerprinting technology
TL;DR: The study suggests the need to breed for high genetic diversity to serve as a buffer against potential epidemics and demonstrates that only cultivar VH-137 possesses a diverse genetic background.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetics of resistance to cotton leaf curl disease in Gossypium hirsutum
TL;DR: The F3 progeny of susceptible F2 plants segregated for resistance, indicating the probable presence of a suppressor gene (S), consistent with three genes being involved in G. hirsutum resistance to CLCuD.
