Lifestyle and the aging brain: interactive effects of modifiable lifestyle behaviors and cognitive ability in men from midlife to old age.
Carol E. Franz,Sean N. Hatton,Jeremy A. Elman,Teresa Warren,Nathan A. Gillespie,Nathan Whitsel,Olivia K. Puckett,Anders M. Dale,Lisa T. Eyler,Christine Fennema-Notestine,Donald J. Hagler,Richard L. Hauger,Ruth McKenzie,Michael C. Neale,Matthew S. Panizzon,Rahul C. Pearce,Chandra A. Reynolds,Mark Sanderson-Cimino,Rosemary Toomey,Xin M. Tu,McKenna E. Williams,Hong Xian,Michael J. Lyons,William S. Kremen +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the influence of lifestyle on brain aging after nearly 30 years, and tested the hypothesis that young adult general cognitive ability (GCA) would moderate these effects.
Posted ContentDOI
Multilevel Twin Models: Geographical Region as a Third Level Variable
Zenab Tamimy,S. T. Kevenaar,Jouke-Jan Hottenga,Michael D. Hunter,Eveline L. de Zeeuw,Michael C. Neale,Catharina E. M. van Beijsterveldt,Conor V. Dolan,Elsje van Bergen,Dorret I. Boomsma +9 more
TL;DR: The application of a 3-level multilevel model to twin data is illustrated by analyzing the regional clustering of 7-year-old children’s height in the Netherlands and suggesting that the phenotypic variance explained by region actually represent ancestry effects on height.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Augmented Classical Twin Design: Incorporating Genome-Wide Identity by Descent Sharing Into Twin Studies in Order to Model Violations of the Equal Environments Assumption
Liang-Dar Hwang,Brittany L. Mitchell,Brittany L. Mitchell,Sarah E. Medland,Nicholas G. Martin,Nicholas G. Martin,Michael C. Neale,David M. Evans +7 more
TL;DR: The authors used identity by descent (IBD) between Dizygotic (DZ) and monozygotic (MZ) twins to estimate separate environmental variance components for MZ and DZ twin pairs, and provided a test of whether these are equal.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Model for Comparative Ratings in Studies of Within-Family Differences
TL;DR: A simple model, based on signal detection theory, is proposed which shows how comparative ratings can be used to estimate within-pair variances of true scores, which can be modeled with any of the conventional approaches to partitioning genetic and environmental variance within families.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Bivariate Genetic Analysis of Drug Abuse Ascertained Through Medical and Criminal Registries in Swedish Twins, Siblings and Half-Siblings.
Hermine H. Maes,Michael C. Neale,Henrik Ohlsson,Mahsa Zahery,Paul Lichtenstein,Kristina Sundquist,Jan Sundquist,Kenneth S. Kendler +7 more
TL;DR: Using objective registry data, the authors found that drug abuse—whether ascertained through medical versus criminal records—was highly heritable and shared environmental factors contributed significantly to the liability of drug abuse.
