Journal ArticleDOI
A finite mixture distribution model for data collected from twins.
TL;DR: The mixture distribution approach is described, which yields unbiased estimates, while showing relatively little loss of statistical precision for misclassification rates of 15% or less, and is shown to perform quite well even when no information on zygosity is available, and may be applied when pair-specific estimates ofZygosity probabilities are available.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic patterns of correlation among subcortical volumes in humans: results from a magnetic resonance imaging twin study.
Lisa T. Eyler,Lisa T. Eyler,Elizabeth Prom-Wormley,Christine Fennema-Notestine,Matthew S. Panizzon,Michael C. Neale,Terry L. Jernigan,Bruce Fischl,Carol E. Franz,Michael J. Lyons,Allison Stevens,Jennifer Pacheco,Michele E. Perry,J. Eric Schmitt,Nicholas C. Spitzer,Larry J. Seidman,Heidi W. Thermenos,Ming T. Tsuang,Anders M. Dale,William S. Kremen,William S. Kremen +20 more
TL;DR: The observed patterns of genetic correlation suggest the influence of multiple genetic influences, including influences on early development, functionally dependent patterns of growth or pruning, or regionally specific losses due to genes involved in aging, stress response, or disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic and environmental influences on lifetime alcohol-related problems in a volunteer sample of older twins.
Carol A. Prescott,John K. Hewitt,Kim R. Truett,Andrew C. Heath,Michael C. Neale,Lindon J. Eaves +5 more
TL;DR: Patterns of alcohol abuse in a community-based U.S. volunteer sample of twins indicate substantial family resemblance for a variety of definitions of lifetime alcohol abuse and alcohol problems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measuring addiction propensity and severity: The need for a new instrument
Kevin P. Conway,Janet Levy,Michael M. Vanyukov,Redonna K. Chandler,Joni L. Rutter,Gary E. Swan,Michael C. Neale +6 more
TL;DR: This paper argues for a new measurement approach and instrument to quantify propensity to and severity of addiction, based on the testable assumption that these constructs can be mapped onto the same dimension of liability to addiction.
Journal Article
Race effects in the genetics of adolescents' body mass index.
TL;DR: Both the genotype and the environment exerted a greater influence on the BMI of black than white adolescents, and the heritability of body mass index was the same for blacks and whites.
