Influence of probiotic supplementation on the developing microbiota in human preterm neonates
Niels van Best,Niels van Best,Sonja Trepels-Kottek,Paul H. M. Savelkoul,Thorsten W. Orlikowsky,Mathias W. Hornef,John Penders +6 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate successful transient colonization by probiotic bacteria and a significant influence on the endogenous microbiota with a reduced abundance of bacterial taxa associated with the development of NEC, emphasizing that probiotic supplementation may allow targeted manipulation of the enteric microbiota and confer a clinical benefit.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of N-acetyl-L-cysteine on the membrane vesicle release and growth of respiratory pathogens.
Charlotte Volgers,Birke J. Benedikter,Gert Grauls,Pauline H. M. Hellebrand,Paul H. M. Savelkoul,Paul H. M. Savelkoul,Frank R. M. Stassen +6 more
TL;DR: It is observed that NAC exerted a strong bacteriostatic effect, but also induced the release of proinflammatory MVs by NTHi, Mrc and Psa, but not by Spn, suggesting that the application of NAC by nebulization at a high dosage may be beneficial for patients with airway conditions associated with bacterial infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) on DNA traces from plasma and dried blood samples
Arnold Catsburg,Wil C. van der Zwet,Servaas A. Morré,Servaas A. Morré,Sander Ouburg,Christina M. J. E. Vandenbroucke-Grauls,Christina M. J. E. Vandenbroucke-Grauls,Paul H. M. Savelkoul +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the Mannose Binding Lectin 2 (MBL2) gene was chosen as targets for analysis, and DNA was extracted from plasma obtained from mothers and their neonates and from old dried blood samples (n=204).
Journal ArticleDOI
Changes in the nasal carriage of drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae in urban and rural Vietnamese schoolchildren
Constance Schultsz,Le Minh Vien,James Campbell,Nguyen Van Vinh Chau,To Song Diep,Nguyen Van Minh Hoang,Tran Thi Thu Nga,Paul H. M. Savelkoul,Kasia Stepnieuwska,Christopher M. Parry,Tran Tinh Hien,Jeremy Farrar +11 more
TL;DR: This study shows that drug resistance is increasing in carriage isolates of S. pneumoniae in rural areas in Vietnam owing to spread of pandemic and emerging resistant clones.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chronic cystitis caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum detected by polymerase chain reaction
A. M. Simoons-Smit,Paul H. M. Savelkoul,D. W. W. Newling,Christina M. J. E. Vandenbroucke-Grauls +3 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a 73-year-old man with chronic cystitis due to Corynebacterium urealyticum was complicated by hematuria and urinary stone formation.
