Discovery and spectroscopy of the young Jovian planet 51 Eri b with the Gemini Planet Imager

Bruce Macintosh, +94 more
- 02 Oct 2015 -
TL;DR: Using the Gemini Planet Imager, a Jupiter-like planet is discovered orbiting the ~20-million-year-old star 51 Eridani at a projected separation of 13 astronomical units and has a methane signature and is probably the smallest exoplanet that has been directly imaged.
Journal ArticleDOI

Discovery and spectroscopy of the young Jovian planet 51 Eri b with the Gemini Planet Imager

Bruce Macintosh, +94 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the Gemini Planet Imager was used to detect a planet orbiting the star 51 Eridani at a projected separation of 13 astronomical units, with a spectrum with strong methane and water vapor absorption.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterizing 51 Eri b from 1 to 5 μm: A Partly Cloudy Exoplanet

Abhijith Rajan, +65 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to detect exoplanets using the ESI program for GPI related to NASA's Exoplanets Research Program (XRP) and NExSS (NExSS).
Journal ArticleDOI

Improving and Assessing Planet Sensitivity of the GPI Exoplanet Survey with a Forward Model Matched Filter

Jean-Baptiste Ruffio, +57 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a matched-filter algorithm for direct detection of point sources in the immediate vicinity of bright stars is presented, where the stellar point spread function (PSF) is first subtracted using a Karhunen-Loeve image processing (KLIP) algorithm with angular and spectral differential imaging (ADI and SDI).
