Journal ArticleDOI
Discovery and resupply of pharmacologically active plant-derived natural products: A review.
Atanas G. Atanasov,Birgit Waltenberger,Eva-Maria Pferschy-Wenzig,Thomas Linder,Christoph Wawrosch,Pavel Uhrin,Veronika Temml,Limei Wang,Stefan Schwaiger,Elke H. Heiss,Judith M. Rollinger,Judith M. Rollinger,Daniela Schuster,Johannes M. Breuss,Valery N. Bochkov,Marko D. Mihovilovic,Brigitte Kopp,Rudolf Bauer,Verena M. Dirsch,Hermann Stuppner +19 more
TL;DR: While the intrinsic complexity of natural product-based drug discovery necessitates highly integrated interdisciplinary approaches, the reviewed scientific developments, recent technological advances, and research trends clearly indicate that natural products will be among the most important sources of new drugs in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Novel function for blood platelets and podoplanin in developmental separation of blood and lymphatic circulation
Pavel Uhrin,Jan Zaujec,Johannes M. Breuss,Damla Olcaydu,Peter Chrenek,Hannes Stockinger,Elke Fuertbauer,Markus Moser,Paula Haiko,Reinhard Fässler,Kari Alitalo,Bernd R. Binder,Dontscho Kerjaschki +12 more
TL;DR: It is shown that interaction of endothelial podoplanin of the developing lymph sac with circulating platelets from the cardinal vein is critical for separating the lymphatic from the blood vascular system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lymph node blood vessels provide exit routes for metastatic tumor cell dissemination in mice
Markus Brown,Markus Brown,Frank P. Assen,Alexander Leithner,Jun Abe,Helga Schachner,G. Asfour,Zsuzsanna Bago-Horvath,Jens V. Stein,Pavel Uhrin,Michael Sixt,Dontscho Kerjaschki +11 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that the lymph node blood vessels can serve as an exit route for systemic dissemination of cancer cells in experimental mouse models, and whether this form of tumor cell spreading occurs in cancer patients remains to be determined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Resveratrol and Its Effects on the Vascular System
TL;DR: Resveratrol, the phenolic substance isolated initially from Veratrum grandiflorum and richly present in grapes, wine, peanuts, soy, and berries, has been attracting attention of scientists and medical doctors for many decades, and its effects on the vascular system are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disruption of the protein C inhibitor gene results in impaired spermatogenesis and male infertility.
Pavel Uhrin,Mieke Dewerchin,Mario Hilpert,Peter Chrenek,Christian Schöfer,Margareta Zechmeister-Machhart,Gerhard Krönke,Anja Vales,Peter Carmeliet,Bernd R. Binder,Margarethe Geiger +10 more
TL;DR: It is shown that PCI(-/-) mice are apparently healthy but that males of this genotype are infertile, and the resulting sperm are malformed and morphologically similar to abnormal sperm seen in some cases of human male infertility.
