Quaas,Lars Ravn-Jonsen,Sonia Sanchez,Sarah Simons,Olivier Thébaud,Maciej T. Tomczak,Clara Ulrich,Diana van Dijk,Youen Vermard,Rüdiger Voss,Staffan Waldo +61 more
TL;DR: In this article, a global review and comparative evaluation of 35 integrated ecological-economic fisheries models (IEEFMs) applied to marine fisheries and marine ecosystem resources is presented to identify the characteristics that determine their usefulness, effectiveness and implementation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Towards the implementation of an integrated ecosystem fleet-based management of European fisheries
Didier Gascuel,Gorka Merino,Ralf Doering,Jean-Noël Druon,Leyre Goti,Sylvie Guénette,Claire Macher,Katrine Soma,Morgane Travers-Trolet,Steve Mackinson +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a diagnostic on the health of each ecosystem is proposed based on the reconstruction of long time-series of catch, the analysis of mean indicators or stocks trajectories derived from ICES stock assessment results, and the analyses of ecosystem indicators, and a fleet-based synthesis is presented using indicators of both the ecological impact and the economic performances of major fleets operating within each ecosystem.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sustainability Impact Assessment (SIA) in fisheries : Implementation in EU fishing regions
Loretta Malvarosa,Arantza Murillas,Sigrid Lehuta,J. Rasmus Nielsen,Claire Macher,Leyre Goti,Arina Motova,Ralf Doering,Gunnar Haraldson,Paolo Accadia,Katell G. Hamon,Francois Bastardie,Christos D. Maravelias,Simon Mardle,Thomas T. Thøgersen +14 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated approach taking into account the main pillars of sustainability and a strong stakeholders' involvement has been defined, the last step being the rating phase, an essential step in a SIA, that provides the possibility to assess the results of different policy options (allowing policy makers to select the most appropriate one) in terms of acceptability, effectiveness, coherence and efficiency.
Journal ArticleDOI
Equity and ITQs: about fair distribution in quota management systems in fisheries.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply an existing framework for assessing equity in resource use systems to tradable quota systems in fisheries, and assess if the framework provides practical guidance for evaluating whether a given ITQ system operates under an equitable framework programme.
Journal ArticleDOI
Integrating economics into fisheries science and advice: progress, needs, and future opportunities
Olivier Thébaud,Jesper Raakjær Nielsen,Arina Motova,Hazel Curtis,Francois Bastardie,G. E. Blomqvist,Fabienne Daures,Leyre Goti,Jorge Holzer,James Innes,Angela Muench,Arantza Murillas,J. Santiago Castro-Rial,Kim Sys,H. van Oostenbrugge,Berthe Vastenhoud +37 more
TL;DR: The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has been actively seeking to expand the scope of its scientific expertise beyond natural sciences by incorporating economic research into the science of ICES to provide integrated perspectives on fisheries systems as discussed by the authors .
