A deep learning framework for neuroscience

TL;DR: It is argued that a deep network is best understood in terms of components used to design it—objective functions, architecture and learning rules—rather than unit-by-unit computation.
Proceedings Article
Dendritic cortical microcircuits approximate the backpropagation algorithm
TL;DR: A novel view of learning on dendritic cortical circuits and on how the brain may solve the long-standing synaptic credit assignment problem is introduced, in which error-driven synaptic plasticity adapts the network towards a global desired output.
Journal ArticleDOI
Target-Specific Expression of Presynaptic NMDA Receptors in Neocortical Microcircuits
Katherine A. Buchanan,Arne V. Blackman,Alexandre W. Moreau,Dale Elgar,Rui Ponte Costa,Rui Ponte Costa,Txomin Lalanne,Adam A. Tudor Jones,Julia Oyrer,P. Jesper Sjöström,P. Jesper Sjöström +10 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that, in layer 5 of developing mouse visual cortex, preNMDARs specifically control synaptic transmission at pyramidal cell inputs to other pyramsidal cells and to Martinotti cells, while leaving those to basket cells unaffected.
Journal ArticleDOI
EPILAB: a software package for studies on the prediction of epileptic seizures.
Cesar Teixeira,Bruno Direito,Hinnerk Feldwisch-Drentrup,Mario Valderrama,Rui Ponte Costa,Catalina Alvarado-Rojas,Stavros D. Nikolopoulos,M. Le Van Quyen,Jens Timmer,Bjoern Schelter,Bjoern Schelter,António Dourado +11 more
TL;DR: EPILAB proved to be an efficient tool for seizure prediction, and aims to be a way to communicate, evaluate, and compare results and data among the seizure prediction community.
Journal ArticleDOI
Probabilistic inference of short-term synaptic plasticity in neocortical microcircuits.
TL;DR: This work introduces a Bayesian formulation, which yields the posterior distribution over the model parameters given the data, and proposes a experimental protocol to more accurately determine synaptic dynamics parameters.
