James F. Bell,S. W. Squyres,Raymond E. Arvidson,H. M. Arneson,D. S. Bass,Diana L. Blaney,N. A. Cabrol,Wendy M. Calvin,Jack D. Farmer,William H. Farrand,Walter Goetz,Matthew P. Golombek,John A. Grant,Ronald Greeley,Edward A. Guinness,Alexander G. Hayes,M. Y. H. Hubbard,K. E. Herkenhoff,Miles J. Johnson,Jeffrey R. Johnson,J. Joseph,Kjartan M. Kinch,Mark T. Lemmon,R. Li,Morten Madsen,Justin N. Maki,Michael C. Malin,E. McCartney,Scott M. McLennan,Harry Y. McSween,D. W. Ming,Jeffrey E. Moersch,R. V. Morris,E. Z. Noe Dobrea,T. J. Parker,J. Proton,J. W. Rice,Frank P. Seelos,Jason M. Soderblom,L. A. Soderblom,Jascha Sohl-Dickstein,R. J. Sullivan,M. J. Wolff,Alian Wang +43 more
TL;DR: Panoramic Camera images at Gusev crater reveal a rock-strewn surface interspersed with high- to moderate-albedo fine-grained deposits occurring in part as drifts or in small circular swales or hollows.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alkaline volcanic rocks from the Columbia Hills, Gusev crater, Mars
Harry Y. McSween,Steven W. Ruff,R. V. Morris,James F. Bell,Kenneth E. Herkenhoff,Ralf Gellert,K. R. Stockstill,Livio L. Tornabene,S. W. Squyres,Joy A. Crisp,Philip R. Christensen,Timothy J. McCoy,David W. Mittlefehldt,M. E. Schmidt +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed three classes of fine-grained or fragmental, relatively unaltered rocks with distinctive thermal emission spectra, found as float on the flanks of the Columbia Hills.
Journal ArticleDOI
Compositional stratigraphy of clay‐bearing layered deposits at Mawrth Vallis, Mars
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors detect phyllosilicates in layered outcrops in and around the Martian outflow channel Mawrth Vallis, and show that these minerals occur in distinct stratigraphic horizons, implying changing environmental conditions and/or a variable sediment source for these layered deposits.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nature and Origin of the Hematite-Bearing Plains of Terra Meridiani Based on Analyses of Orbital and Mars Exploration Rover Data Sets
Raymond E. Arvidson,Francois Poulet,R. V. Morris,J. P. Bibring,James F. Bell,S. W. Squyres,Philip R. Christensen,Giancarlo Bellucci,Brigitte Gondet,Bethany L. Ehlmann,William H. Farrand,Robin L. Fergason,Matthew P. Golombek,J. L. Griffes,John P. Grotzinger,Edward A. Guinness,K. E. Herkenhoff,Jeffrey R. Johnson,Göstar Klingelhöfer,Yves Langevin,D. W. Ming,Kimberly D. Seelos,R. J. Sullivan,J. G. Ward,Sandra M. Wiseman,M. J. Wolff +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, a regional-scale model is presented for the formation of the Meridiani plains explored by Opportunity, based on a rising ground water table late in the Noachian Era that trapped and altered local materials and aeolian basaltic sands.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cassini Imaging Science: initial results on Saturn's atmosphere.
Carolyn C. Porco,E. Baker,J. Barbara,K. Beurle,André Brahic,Joseph A. Burns,Sébastien Charnoz,Nicholas J. Cooper,D. D. Dawson,A. D. Del Genio,Tilmann Denk,Luke Dones,Ulyana A. Dyudina,Michael W. Roatsch,Joseph N. Spitale,S. W. Squyres,Peter C. Thomas,Matthew S. Tiscareno,Elizabeth P. Turtle,Ashwin R. Vasavada,J. Veverka,Roland Wagner,Robert West +34 more
TL;DR: From analysis of cloud motions through early October 2004, vertical wind shear in Saturn's equatorial jet and a maximum wind speed of ∼375 meters per second are reported, a value that differs from both Hubble Space Telescope and Voyager values.
