TL;DR: Identifying and quantifying planetary boundaries that must not be transgressed could help prevent human activities from causing unacceptable environmental change, argue Johan Rockstrom and colleagues.

Planetary boundaries: Exploring the safe operating space for humanity
Johan Rockström,Johan Rockström,Will Steffen,Will Steffen,Kevin J. Noone,Åsa Persson,Åsa Persson,F. Stuart Chapin,Eric F. Lambin,Timothy M. Lenton,Marten Scheffer,Carl Folke,Carl Folke,Hans Joachim Schellnhuber,Hans Joachim Schellnhuber,Björn Nykvist,Björn Nykvist,Cynthia A. de Wit,Terry P. Fabry,James Hansen,Brian Walker,Brian Walker,Diana Liverman,Katherine Richardson,Paul J. Crutzen,Jonathan A. Foley +39 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a new approach to global sustainability in which they define planetary boundaries within which they expect that humanity can operate safely. But the proposed concept of "planetary boundaries" lays the groundwork for shifting our approach to governance and management, away from the essentially sectoral analyses of limits to growth aimed at minimizing negative externalities, toward the estimation of the safe space for human development.
A safe operating space for humanity
Johan Rockström,Will Steffen,Kevin J. Noone,Åsa Persson,F. Stuart Chapin,Eric F. Lambin,Timothy M. Lenton,Marten Scheffer,Carl Folke,Hans Joachim,Schnellhuber,Björn Nykvist,Cynthia A. de Wit,Terry P. TL;DR: Identifying and quantifying planetary boundaries that must not be transgressed could help prevent human activities from causing unacceptable environmental change, argue Johan Rockstrom and colleagues as discussed by the authors, who identify and quantify planetary boundaries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Resilience and vulnerability: Complementary or conflicting concepts?
Fiona Miller,Henny Osbahr,Emily Boyd,Emily Boyd,Frank Thomalla,Sukaina Bharwani,Gina Ziervogel,Gina Ziervogel,Brian Walker,Brian Walker,Joern Birkmann,Sander van der Leeuw,Johan Rockström,Johan Rockström,Jochen Hinkel,Thomas E. Downing,Carl Folke,Donald R. Nelson,Donald R. Nelson +18 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the emerging linkages and complementarities between the concepts of resilience and vulnerability to identify areas of synergy, with regard to theory, methodology, and application.
Journal ArticleDOI
The globalization of socio-ecological systems: An agenda for scientific research
Oran R. Young,Frans Berkhout,Gilberto C. Gallopin,Marco A. Janssen,Elinor Ostrom,Sander van der Leeuw +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of globalization on the resilience, vulnerability, and adaptability of coupled human-environment systems (SESs) have been discussed, and the authors argue that socioeconomic resilience regularly substitutes for biophysical resilience in SESs with consequences that are often unforeseen.
