Journal ArticleDOI
IL-6 and IL-18 in blood may discriminate cirrhotic patients with and without minimal hepatic encephalopathy.
Carmina Montoliu,Blanca Piedrafita,Miguel A. Serra,Juan A. del Olmo,Amparo Urios,José M. Rodrigo,Vicente Felipo +6 more
TL;DR: Assessing whether there is a correlation between the alterations in parameters reflecting inflammation, hyperammonemia, and the presence of MHE found that inflammation-associated alterations related with IL-6 and IL-18 may contribute to MHE.
Journal ArticleDOI
Glutamine synthetase activity and glutamine content in brain: modulation by NMDA receptors and nitric oxide.
Elena Kosenko,Marta Llansola,Carmina Montoliu,Pilar Monfort,Regina Rodrigo,Mariluz Hernández-Viadel,Slaven Erceg,Ana María Sánchez-Pérez,Vicente Felipo +8 more
TL;DR: It is found that glutamine synthetase activity and glutamine content in brain are modulated by NMDA receptors and nitric oxide, and this may be useful, for example, to increase ammonia detoxification in brain in hyperammonemic situations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain edema and inflammatory activation in bile duct ligated rats with diet‐induced hyperammonemia: A model of hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhosis
Rodrigo Jover,Regina Rodrigo,Vicente Felipo,Ricardo Insausti,Javier Sáez-Valero,M. Salud García-Ayllón,Isabel Suárez,Asunción Candela,Antonio Compañ,Angel Esteban,Omar Cauli,Eva Ausó,Erika Rodríguez,Ana Gutiérrez,Eva Girona,Slaven Erceg,Pere Berbel,Miguel Pérez-Mateo +17 more
TL;DR: The BDL+HD rats displayed similar neuroanatomical and neurochemical characteristics to human HE in liver cirrhosis, and brain edema and inflammatory activation can be detected under these circumstances.
Journal ArticleDOI
NMDA receptor antagonists prevent acute ammonia toxicity in mice.
Carlos Hermenegildo,Goizane Marcaida,Carmina Montoliu,Santiago Grisolia,María-Dolores Miñana,Vicente Felipo +5 more
TL;DR: The results strongly support the idea that acute ammonia toxicity is mediated by activation of NMDA receptors and that inhibitors of calcineurin, of glutamine synthetase or antioxidants did not prevent ammonia-induced death of mice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Glutamatergic and gabaergic neurotransmission and neuronal circuits in hepatic encephalopathy
Omar Cauli,Regina Rodrigo,Marta Llansola,Carmina Montoliu,Pilar Monfort,Blanca Piedrafita,Nisrin El Mlili,Jordi Boix,Ana Agusti,Vicente Felipo +9 more
TL;DR: This work reviews the alterations in the function of the neuronal circuits between basal ganglia-thalamus-cortex modulating motor activity and the role of sequential alterations in glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission in these alterations.
