Effects of lower frequency-to-electrode allocations on speech and pitch perception with the hybrid short-electrode cochlear implant.

Abstract: Because some users of a Hybrid short-electrode cochlear implant (CI) lose their low-frequency residual hearing after receiving the CI, we tested whether increasing the CI speech processor frequency allocation range to include lower frequencies improves speech perception in these individuals. A secondary goal was to see if pitch perception changed after experience with the new CI frequency allocation. Three subjects who had lost all residual hearing in the implanted ear were recruited to use an experimental CI frequency allocation with a lower frequency cutoff than their current clinical frequency allocation. Speech and pitch perception results were collected at multiple time points throughout the study. In general, subjects showed little or no improvement for speech recognition with the experimental allocation when the CI was worn with a hearing aid in the contralateral ear. However, all 3 subjects showed changes in pitch perception that followed the changes in frequency allocations over time, consistent with previous studies showing that pitch perception changes upon provision of a CI.

Absence of parvovirus B19 infection in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Abstract: Objective. To evaluate the presence of infection with parvovirus B19 in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) who also had rheumatologic symptoms and mild hematologic abnormalities. Methods. Seven patients meeting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention working case definition for CFS who also had mild leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, or anemia were studied. Bone marrow was aspirated from each patient, and examined for morphologic abnormalities, including features seen in marrow infections with parvovirus B19, as well as for parvoviral DNA, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. Serum obtained at the time of marrow aspiration was also evaluated for parvoviral DNA, using the PCR method, and was examined for the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies to the virus. Results. No evidence of marrow involvement with parvovirus B19 was found in any patient. One patient had antibody evidence of a transient parvoviral infection, during which time an underlying thrombocytopenia worsened. Conclusion. Despite examining a selected group of patients thought most likely to have parvoviral infection, based on clinical and hematologic measures, no evidence of clinically important parvoviral infection was noted. Thus, it seems unlikely that parvovirus B19 plays a role in CFS, even though it has been associated with fibromyalgia, a clinically similar syndrome.

Near-surface seismic reflection profiling of the Matanuska Glacier, Alaska

Abstract: Several common‐midpoint seismic reflection profiles collected on the Matanuska Glacier, Alaska, clearly demonstrate the feasibility of collecting high‐quality, high‐resolution near‐surface reflection data on a temperate glacier. The results indicate that high‐resolution seismic reflection can be used to accurately determine the thickness and horizontal distribution of debris‐rich ice at the base of the glacier. The basal ice thickens about 30% over a 300‐m distance as the glacier flows out of an overdeepening. The reflection events ranged from 80‐ to 140‐m depth along the longitudinal axis of the glacier. The dominant reflection is from the contact between clean, englacial ice and the underlying debris‐rich basal ice, but a strong characteristic reflection is also observed from the base of the debris‐rich ice (bottom of the glacier).
