TL;DR: In this article, the synthesis of cDNA is inhibited by an oligonucleotide complementary to a region downstream from the primer, where the RNA fragment bound to the antisense oligon nucleotide-RNA duplex is truncated during reverse transcription.
Abstract: We have demonstrated that the synthetic oligonucleotides, either unmodified or phosphorothioates, prevent cDNA synthesis by the AMV or HIV reverse transcriptases. The RNA was truncated at the antisense oligonucleotide-RNA duplex during the reverse transcription. Th blockage involves the degradation of the RNA fragment bound to the antisense oligonucleotide by the reverse transcriptase associated RNase H activity. However, in the case of phosphorothioate oligomer, the production of cDNA would be inhibited by a hybrid formed between the AMV RT and phosphorothioate oligomer than arrested elongation of the cDNA strands, whereas arrest of a growing cDNA strand by HIV RT can be blocked by an oligonucleotide complementary to a region downstream from the primer.

TL;DR: A scheme of optimization of a trial wave function in the variational Monte Carlo calculation is developed and it is found that these wave functions prove to be substantial improvements compared to the conventional Jastrow-type wave functions.
Abstract: A scheme of optimization of a trial wave function in the variational Monte Carlo calculation is developed. It provides a more precise description of the ground state for strongly correlated electronic systems with highly improved trial wave function. A general type of variational wave function constructed from a linear combination of Slater determinants multiplied by Jastrow correlation factors is proposed. They can explicitly contain low-energy fluctuations and long-range correlations. Using this optimization method, we examine the properties of these wave functions by applying them to a one-dimensional Hubbard model for which the exact solution is available for comparison. It is found that these wave functions prove to be substantial improvements compared to the conventional Jastrow-type wave functions.

TL;DR: In this article, the magnetic rheometer was used to observe the viscoelastic properties of hydrocolloid gellan gum aqueous solutions, and it was found that the mechanical properties of these solutions depended strongly upon the time and the temperature after dissolving gellanical gum in water, and that negative thixotropy was found when the specimen stood for 25-100 h after dissolution.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used interference fringes to determine the gradient of the temperature and of the solute concentration in the liquid ahead of the solid-liquid interface, and the experimental data on solidification rates and concentration gradients agree well with numerical values based not on the diffusion-controlled model, but on the boundary layer model which assumes fluid mixing beyond the boundary layers.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the influence of added CO on N 2 (A 3 Σ u + ) in the low pressure region, and found that the effective lifetime τ 1 of N 2(A 3 ǫ u+ ) decreases only slightly with an increase in CO content, although scattering of the measured values are appreciable.
Abstract: Previously, we investigated the destruction processes of metastable nitrogen molecules N 2 (A 3 Σ u + ), and analyzed the experimental data by taking the reflection of metastables at the boundary into account. In this paper, the work is extended to N 2 +CO mixture gases in order to investigate the influence of added CO on N 2 (A 3 Σ u + ). In the low pressure region, the experimentally obtained effective lifetime τ 1 of N 2 (A 3 Σ u + ) decreases only slightly with an increase in CO content. On the other hand, the reflection coefficient of N 2 (A 3 Σ u + ) on the electrode surface seems to become smaller by adding CO molecules, although scattering of the measured values are appreciable.

TL;DR: In the assays of HIV, oligomers (S-ODNs) with complete replacement of the phosphodiesters with phosphorothioate groups were found to be very active and of particular interest are the oligomers complementary to the HIV sequences which possessed higher anti-HIV activity than the homooligomers itself.

TL;DR: Magnetic properties of metal layer deposited by reduction of polymer containing metal ions were investigated in this article, where the X-ray diffraction pattern of the metal layer with excellent magnetic properties gives distinct peaks corresponding to the (101) and (100) planes of the crystal of α-Co.
Abstract: Magnetic properties of metal layer deposited by reduction of polymer containing metal ions were investigated. Varying the ratio of the cobalt ion to the nickel ion in the polymer, the coercivity, the maximum flux density and the remanent flux density of the deposited metal layer were changed from 100 to 600 Oe, from 1 000 to 12 600 G and from 500 to 7 600 G, respectively. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the metal layer with excellent magnetic properties gives distinct peaks corresponding to the (101) and (100) planes of the crystal of α-Co. This suggests that such a deposited metal layer has the structure of highly crystalline metal layer.

TL;DR: A simple and compact computer code for the output beam mode analysis of the CO laser has been developed, which is described in C language in order to be compiled and executed by PCs, Mackintoshes, and workstations.
Abstract: A simple and compact computer code for the output beam mode analysis of the CO laser has been developed. The theoretical model based on the asymptotic expansion is converted to the computer model, which is divided into smaller structural modules. The program is described in C language in order to be compiled and executed by PCs, Mackintoshes, and workstations. The beam mode profiles under the multiline operation and misaligned cavity conditions are analyzed.© (1993) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. TL;DR: In this paper, a self-mixing laser diode (SM-LD) was used as a light guide to measure a Doppler best signal with high signal to noise ratio in the range of 20-40 dB.
Abstract: A new laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) employing a self-mixing laser diode (SM-LD), which has a long optical fiber of 10 m to 1 km, as a light guide. This new LDV can measure a Doppler best signal with high signal to noise ratio in the range of 20-40 dB. The reason why the Doppler beat signal is obtained from a photodiode accommodated in the SM-LD having such a long fiber is attributed to the coherence length enhancement of the SM-LD, which extends to 400 m or more. >

TL;DR: The Al2O3 compact with extremely fine grain size (about 0.8gm) was prepared by sintering in vacuum at 1523k and then HIP-treatment in argon at 1473k.
Abstract: The Al2O3 compact with extremely fine grain size (about 0.8gm) was prepared by sintering in vacuum at 1523K and then HIP-treatment in argon at 1473K. The structure and mechanical properties of the white ceramics as above were mainly studied, comparing with those of conventional white ceramics. The results obtained, for instance, were as follows. The room temperature transverserupture strength of the fine grained ceramics reached the value of about 1.3 GPa, being in good contrast to that of about 0.7-0.9GPa of conventional one (according to JIS R 1601, 1981). It was noted that the value of creep strain of fine grained one surprisingly increased, in comparison with conventional one.

TL;DR: In this paper, the phase changes in the Nb2O5-addressed R phase occurred similarly to the non-added R phase following the route quenched-R→H→S+r→R during heating and R→H →S+R during cooling, respectively.
Abstract: Nb2O5-added R (ramsdellite) phase was syntbesized by the melt-quenching method. Addition of 3 to 5mol% Nb2O5 accelerated the R→H (hexagonal phase) transformation, retarded the H→S+r (spinel and rutile) successive decomosition reaction, and stabilized the H phase at high temperatures. These effects were possibly caused by the preferential incorporation of Nb2O5 in the H phase. The phase changes in the Nb2O5-added R phase occurred similarly to the non-added R phase following the route quenched-R→H→S+r→R during heating and R→H→S+r during cooling, respectively. The R phase containing 3mol% Nb2O5 was heated to 850°C at 2°C/min in air, then quenched, and the H phase was obtained although very small amounts of rutile and spinal were contained. Lattice constants of the obtained H phase were a=0.8777(8)nm and c=6.988(2)nm, and the effect of Nb2O5 addition was hardly recognized. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of the H phase was determined to be α=1.34×10-5K-1 between room temperature and 900°C. Investigation on the phase changes in the H phase during heating clarified those in the R phase.
