TL;DR: The atypical ALDH2 gene (ALDH22) was found to be extremely rare in Caucasoids, Negroids, Papua New Guineans, Australian Aborigines and Aurocanians and this mutant gene was finding to be widely prevalent among the Mongoloids.
Abstract: The distribution of the human liver alcohol dehydrogenase, ADH2, and aldehyde dehydrogenase, ALDH2, genotypes in 21 different populations comprising Mongoloids, Caucasoids, and Negroids was determined by hybridization of the amplified genomic DNA with allele-specific oligonucleotide probes. Whereas the frequency of the ADH1(2) allele was found to be relatively high in the Caucasoids, Mexican Mestizos, Brazilian Indios, Swedish Lapps, Papua New Guineans and Negroids, the frequency of the ADH2(2) gene was considerably higher in the Mongoloids and Australian Aborigines. The atypical ALDH2 gene (ALDH2(2)) was found to be extremely rare in Caucasoids, Negroids, Papua New Guineans, Australian Aborigines and Aurocanians (South Chile). In contrast, this mutant gene was found to be widely prevalent among the Mongoloids. Individuals possessing the abnormal ALDH2 gene show alcohol-related sensitivity responses (e.g. facial flushing), have the tendency not to be habitual drinkers, and apparently suffer less from alcoholism and alcohol-related liver disease.

Abstract: Blend membrane consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan was prepared from a solvent-casting technique and characterized for their intermolecular interactions using infrared and X-ray diffraction methods. Cross-linking the blend with glutaraldehyde produces a membrane with lower crystallinity and a smaller swelling degree, but having improved thermostability and mechanical properties. The present blend membrane shows a pH-dependent swelling characteristic and will be discussed in detail. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the permeability of riboflavin and insulin through polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan blend membrane was conducted.
Abstract: The permeation of riboflavin and insulin through poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan blend membrane was conducted. The permeability coefficients of both solutes through the crosslinked PVA and chitosan blend membrane were in the order of 10−6−10−7 cm3 cm/cm2s and showed a pH dependence. The pH-dependent permeation behavior was discussed in terms of water content and water structure inside of the swollen membrane. Riboflavin and insulin were presumed to permeate through the free water region in the swollen blend membrane. The DSC thermograms of these membranes indicated that the content of free water and the amount of freezing bound water increased with the water content in the membrane. The greater permeation rate of solutes in acidic solution rather than in neutral solution was due to an increase in both water content and the amount of free water and freezing bound water.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated for the first time that AGE directly induced human AML cell proliferation via the MAPK, PI3K and JAK/STAT pathways.
Abstract: This study investigated whether advanced glycation end products (AGE) and RAGE (receptor for AGE) are involved in the proliferation of leukemia cells. AGE strongly induced the proliferation of primary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells and cell lines. MAP kinase, PI3K and JAK/STAT pathways were involved in cellular proliferation of HEL cells by AGE. RAGE antisense S-ODN effectively inhibited cell growth, induced apoptosis and reversed AGE-induced expression of targeting molecules in HEL cells. The study demonstrated for the first time that AGE directly induced human AML cell proliferation via the MAPK, PI3K and JAK/STAT pathways.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple connection is established between all independent fermion zero modes and corresponding bosonic zero modes in supersymmetrized self-dual Chern-Simons Higgs systems, using the index theorem and other means.
Abstract: Fermion zero modes around a general multivortex background are analyzed in supersymmetrized self-dual (Maxwell-) Chern-Simons Higgs systems, using the index theorem and other means. In the models with an $N=2$ extended supersymmetry, a simple connection is established between all independent fermion zero modes and corresponding bosonic zero modes. We provide a supersymmetry-based explanation of the result.

TL;DR: In this paper, the design variables of a single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM) using the finite element method (FEM) and the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) are presented.
Abstract: The optimization of the design variables of a single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM) using the finite-element method (FEM) and the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) is presented. Thrust is taken as an objective function in order to maximize thrust under a constant current drive, and seven independent design variables and nine constraints are chosen. As a result, pole pitch/airgap and pole pitch/aluminum depth for the best design are determined. Thrust is increased by 30% under a constant current of 12 A, so that the input current can be reduced to 10.5 A for necessary starting thrust because thrust is proportional to I/sup 2/. >

TL;DR: In this article, the role of microstructural parameters on the fracture mechanism of SiC-particle-reinforced aluminium alloy 6061-T6 composites with 5, 10, 20 and 30% volume fraction was investigated.
Abstract: To investigate the role of microstructural parameters on the fracture mechanism, SiC-particle-reinforced aluminium alloy 6061-T6 composites with 5, 10, 20 and 30% volume fraction were tested to measure the fracture toughness on a precracked compact tension specimen. The interparticle spacing of two adjacent particles with the critical size was related to the fracture toughness. The critical particle diameter was experimentally determined from the plastic zone size and the crack-tip-opening displacement using the Hutchinson-Rice-Rosengren solution and the Hahn-Rosenfield model. It has been found that the critical particle diameter decreased as the volume fraction of SiC particles increased.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cross-national study of the impact of country-of-origin information on the United States and Korean consumer perceptions of foreign products was conducted and the results showed that significant country of origin effects are found even when countryof origin information is presented along with other product attribute information.
Abstract: This paper presents the results from a cross-national study of the impact of country-of-origin information on the United States and Korean consumer perceptions of foreign products. Several interesting results are found. First, significant country-of-origin effects are found even when country-of-origin information is presented along with other product attribute information. Second, country-of-origin effects are stronger for Koreans than for Americans, especially when products are made in unfavorable countries. Third, country-of-origin information has direct effects on product evaluations independently of other product attributes. Finally, product attribute information has stronger effects on overall evaluations than does country-of-origin information. Theoretical and practical implications of these results are also discussed.

TL;DR: Relationships among delay, throughput, and fairness, three conflicting performance criteria in modern flow-controlled communication networks, are investigated, and an optimal tradeoff among them is defined.
Abstract: Relationships among delay, throughput, and fairness, three conflicting performance criteria in modern flow-controlled communication networks, are investigated, and an optimal tradeoff among them is defined. Several fair bandwidth sharing schemes are introduced and compared with each other for a variety of network configurations. The results obtained are then utilized to define an optimal operating point (OOP) which maximizes the generalized network power. Given a fixed routing, it is shown that the OOP can be found via any unconstrained optimization algorithm. If rerouting is allowed, it is also shown that the OOP can be found by solving a variant of the multicommodity convex cost network flow problem. An algorithm for this problem is developed and tested for a number of networks. A delay-directive flow control scheme is suggested to realize the OOP in real operating networks, and additional implementation issues are discussed. >

TL;DR: Family history of glaucoma was found to be a risk factors more significantly for OH than for POAG and when the 361 POAG patients were compared to 361 controls matched with respect to age, race, and sex, hypertension and diabetes mellitus did not appear to be independent risk factors.
Abstract: To investigate the risk factors for glaucoma, we reviewed the clinical record of 361 primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients, 178 ocular hypertensives (OH), and 927 controls without POAG or OH, randomly selected from an urban medical center eye clinic. Old age defined as > or = 55 year, (odds ratio ratio (OR) = 3.13 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.06-4.76, P < .0001), black race (OR = 2.58, 95% CI: 1.79-3.74, p < .0001), hypertension (OR = 1.709, 95% CI: 1.15-2.51, P < .0108), and diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.08-3.09, P = .0308) were identified as significant risk factors in POAG compared to OH. Old Age (OR = 4.94, 95% CI: 3.62-6.76, p < .0001), and black race (OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.59-2.61, P < .0001), HTN (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.26-2.11, P = .0002), and DM (OR = 1.40 95% CI: 1.02-1.92 P = .0450) were also significant risk factors when compared to normal controls. However, when the 361 POAG patients were compared to 361 controls matched with respect to age, race, and sex, hypertension and diabetes mellitus did not appear to be independent risk factors. Family history of glaucoma was found to be a risk factors more significantly for OH (OR = 6.79, 95% CI: 4.39-10.50, P < .0001) than for POAG (OR = 2.83, 95% CI: 1.90-4.21, P < .0001) compared to the matched control subjects.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract: A 44-year-old woman presented with blisters on her face of 1-month's duration. A biopsy showed a subepidermal bulla with a dermal infiltrate of inflammatory cells and thick linear deposits of immunoreactants along the dermo-epidermal junction. Using Western immunoblots, the patient's IgG antibody was found to recognize type VII procollagen. Moderate doses of oral prednisolone resulted in a complete remission, without a recurrence for more than 3 years.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the pervaporation performance of polyimide (PI) membrane from 3,3′, 4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 4, 4′-oxydianiline (ODA) at 80wt% feed acetic acid concentration and at 65°C.
Abstract: Pervaporation performance of polyimide (PI) membrane from 3,3′, 4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA) was investigated at 80wt% feed acetic acid concentration and at 65°C. Imide contents in PI film were estimated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) method. The separation factor of PI membrane increases with the degree of imidization, while the flux was almost constant. The separation factor toward water through PI-94 membrane was about 417 with the flux of 47 g/m2. hr measured at 65°C and with 80wt% acetic acid as a feed. PI-94 showed the best pervaporation performance toward the separation of water from acetic acid solution among the PI membranes investigated. The swelling behaviors at various feed concenration were also examined.

TL;DR: In this paper, a series connection of power transistors has been proposed, simulated, and studied experimentally to improve the reliability and efficiency of high-voltage power converters using series-connected transistors.
Abstract: In order to improve the reliability and efficiency of high-voltage power converters using series-connected power transistors, a novel method for series connection of power transistors has been proposed, simulated, and studied experimentally. This method has the following advantage compared with conventional methods: the snubber losses and switching times can be reduced by minimizing the value of snubber capacitors: the number of connected devices is not limited; the method is unrelated to the sequence of turn-off; and the circuit is relatively simple. This novel switching algorithm for series connection is able to implement not only dynamic voltage balancing despite the difference of switching characteristics but also the minimization of the value of the snubber capacitor by the Miller effect. >

TL;DR: The results suggest the importance of additional risk factors other than IOP for glaucomatous optic nerve damage, and suggest the need to select patients with a family history ofglaucoma as a risk factor for ocular hypertension.
Abstract: To elucidate the family history of glaucoma (FHG) as a risk factor for ocular hypertension(OH) vs glaucomatous optic nerve damage, we reviewed the clinical records of 361 primary open-angle glaucoma(POAG) patients, 178 OH subjects, and 927 normal controls randomly selected from an urban medical center eye clinic. The prevalence of a positive FHG was 27% in the POAG patients, 47% in the OH subjects, and 11% in the normal controls. Whereas a positive FHG was a significant risk factor for both OH and glaucoma compared to normal control subjects (OR = 7.56, 95% CI: 5.27-10.85, P < .0001 for OH; OR = 3.15, 95% CI: 2.31-4.31, P < .0001), it was a risk factor more significantly for OH than for glaucoma being significantly more prevalent in OH than in POAG (OR = 2.40, 95% CI: 1.65-3.49, P < .0001). These results suggest the importance of additional risk factors other than IOP for glaucomatous optic nerve damage.
