Abstract: In a Bayesian mixture model it is not necessary a priori to limit the number of components to be finite. In this paper an infinite Gaussian mixture model is presented which neatly sidesteps the difficult problem of finding the "right" number of mixture components. Inference in the model is done using an efficient parameter-free Markov Chain that relies entirely on Gibbs sampling.

Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the 13 Carbon-nuclear magnetic resonance ( 13 C-NMR) spectroscopy of monosaccharides. The 13 C-NMR spectroscopy has become increasingly important as a tool for the characterization and structural elucidation of sugars and their derivatives. Although 13 C-NMR is closely related to 1 H-NMR spectroscopy, especially when both types of spectra are recorded with Fourier-transform instruments, the two techniques are sufficiently different to be valuable complements to each other. In many cases, in particular when dealing with complex molecules such as polysaccharides, the amount of information obtainable from 1 H-NMR spectra is limited as compared to that revealed by 13 C- NMR spectra. This chapter provides an almost complete collection of 13 C- NMR chemical shifts of monosaccharides, their methyl glycosides, and acetates, along with the examples of shift data for as many different types of monosaccharide derivative as possible. It also provides details on sampling techniques and assignment techniques, and discusses the identity of monosaccharides, their structure determination, and conformational analysis .

Abstract: The 12th generation of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) was adopted in December 2014 by the Working Group V-MOD appointed by the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA). It updates the previous IGRF generation with a definitive main field model for epoch 2010.0, a main field model for epoch 2015.0, and a linear annual predictive secular variation model for 2015.0-2020.0. Here, we present the equations defining the IGRF model, provide the spherical harmonic coefficients, and provide maps of the magnetic declination, inclination, and total intensity for epoch 2015.0 and their predicted rates of change for 2015.0-2020.0. We also update the magnetic pole positions and discuss briefly the latest changes and possible future trends of the Earth’s magnetic field.

Abstract: Macroscopic properties of a porous ductile medium are analysed on the basis of an axisymmetric numerical model and on the basis of a set of approximate constitutive equations for a voided material suggested by Gurson. Both models are used to analyse bifurcation into a localized mode. A number of predictions obtained by the two different approaches are in reasonable agreement; but it is found under several different loading conditions that the critical strain for localization is considerably overestimated by the approximate continuum model. A relatively simple modification of the constitutive equations for a voided medium results in considerably improved predictions.

Abstract: Background There is uncertainty about the prevalence of food allergy in communities. Objective To assess the prevalence of food allergy by performing a meta-analysis according to the method of assessment used. Methods The foods assessed were cow's milk, hen's egg, peanut, fish, shellfish, and an overall estimate of food allergy. We summarized the information in 5 categories: self-reported symptoms, specific IgE positive, specific skin prick test positive, symptoms combined with sensitization, and food challenge studies. We systematically searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for publications since 1990. The meta-analysis included only original studies. They were stratified by age groups: infant/preschool, school children, and adults. Results A total of 934 articles were identified, but only 51 were considered appropriate for inclusion. The prevalence of self-reported food allergy was very high compared with objective measures. There was marked heterogeneity between studies regardless of type of assessment or food item considered, and in most analyses this persisted after age stratification. Self-reported prevalence of food allergy varied from 1.2% to 17% for milk, 0.2% to 7% for egg, 0% to 2% for peanuts and fish, 0% to 10% for shellfish, and 3% to 35% for any food. Conclusion There is a marked heterogeneity in the prevalence of food allergy that could be a result of differences in study design or methodology, or differences between populations. Clinical implications We recommend that measurements be made by using standardized methods, if possible food challenge. We need to be cautious in estimates of prevalence based only on self-reported food allergy.
