TL;DR: With some additional analytical improvements, isomer-specific PCB analysis can be utilized to determine the composition of commercial PCBs and accurately follow the fate and distribution of these pollutants within the global ecosystem.
Abstract: The synthesis and spectroscopic properties of all the mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, hexa-, and heptachlorobipheynls are reported and the synthesis of all 209 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is completed. The retention times and molar response factors of the 209 PCBs were determined relative to a reference standard, octachloronaphthalene. The retention times for these compounds generally increased with increasing chlorine content, and it was apparent that within a series of isomers there was an increase in retention time with increasing meta and para and decreasing ortho substitution. By use of a 50-m narrow bore fused silica capillary column coated with SE-54, it was possible to separate 187 PCB congeners, and only 11 pairs of compounds were not fully resolved. With some additional analytical improvements, isomer-specific PCB analysis can be utilized to determine the composition of commercial PCBs and accurately follow the fate and distribution of these pollutants within the global ecosystem.

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions at the LHC in 2010.
Abstract: The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined. For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta)<2.4, while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than 90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions of all quantities are well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation.

TL;DR: In this article, the linear polarization correlation between the two photons from the $7.3,S 1,S 0,P 1,S 0$ cascade was measured and the results were used to evaluate Freedman's version of the Bell inequality, $\ensuremath{\delta}l~0$.
Abstract: We have measured the linear polarization correlation between the two photons from the $7^{3}S_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6^{3}P_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6^{1}S_{0}$ cascade of ${\mathrm{Hg}}^{200}$. The results were used to evaluate Freedman's version of the Bell inequality, $\ensuremath{\delta}l~0$. Our result is ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{\mathrm{exp}}=+0.046\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014$, in clear violation of the inequality and in excellent agreement with the quantum mechanical prediction, ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{\mathrm{QM}}=+0.044\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.007$. An important feature of the experiment was the explicit measurement of the initial density matrix for the cascading atoms.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe and analyze possible designs for subsequent LIGO-III interferometers that can beat the standard quantum limit (SQL) in the vicinity of 100 Hz.
Abstract: The LIGO-II gravitational-wave interferometers (ca. 2006–2008) are designed to have sensitivities near the standard quantum limit (SQL) in the vicinity of 100 Hz. This paper describes and analyzes possible designs for subsequent LIGO-III interferometers that can beat the SQL. These designs are identical to a conventional broad band interferometer (without signal recycling), except for new input and/or output optics. Three designs are analyzed: (i) a squeezed-input interferometer (conceived by Unruh based on earlier work of Caves) in which squeezed vacuum with frequency-dependent (FD) squeeze angle is injected into the interferometer’s dark port; (ii) a variational-output interferometer (conceived in a different form by Vyatchanin, Matsko and Zubova), in which homodyne detection with FD homodyne phase is performed on the output light; and (iii) a squeezed-variational interferometer with squeezed input and FD-homodyne output. It is shown that the FD squeezed-input light can be produced by sending ordinary squeezed light through two successive Fabry-Perot filter cavities before injection into the interferometer, and FD-homodyne detection can be achieved by sending the output light through two filter cavities before ordinary homodyne detection. With anticipated technology (power squeeze factor e-2R=0.1 for input squeezed vacuum and net fractional loss of signal power in arm cavities and output optical train e*=0.01) and using an input laser power Io in units of that required to reach the SQL (the planned LIGO-II power, ISQL), the three types of interferometer could beat the amplitude SQL at 100 Hz by the following amounts μ≡sqrt[Sh]/sqrt[ShSQL] and with the following corresponding increase V=1/μ3 in the volume of the universe that can be searched for a given noncosmological source: Squeezed input —μ≃sqrt[e-2R]≃0.3 and V≃1/0.33≃30 using Io/ISQL=1. Variational-output—μ≃e*1/4≃0.3 and V≃30 but only if the optics can handle a ten times larger power: Io/ISQL≃1/sqrt[e*]=10. Squeezed varational —μ=1.3(e-2Re*)1/4≃0.24 and V≃80 using Io/ISQL=1; and μ≃(e-2Re*)1/4≃0.18 and V≃180 using Io/ISQL=sqrt[e-2R/e*]≃3.2.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theory is developed for predicting the time-dependent size and shape of cracks in linearly viscoelastic, isotropic media, and a local energy criterion of failure at the tip is introduced, which is applicable to both constant and transient tip velocities.
Abstract: A theory is developed for predicting the time-dependent size and shape of cracks in linearly viscoelastic, isotropic media First, the effect of a narrow zone of disintegrating material at the crack tip on opening displacement and on a finite stress distribution ahead of the tip is examined for elastic materials Extension to viscoelastic media is then made Although the undamaged portion of the continuum is assumed linear, no significant restrictions are placed on the nature of the zone of failing material at the crack tip and, therefore, this material may be highly nonlinear, rate-dependent, and even discontinuous Finally, formulation of the problem is completed by introducing a local energy criterion of failure at the tip which is applicable to both constant and transient tip velocities Parts II–IV, to appear in succeeding issues, will cover approximate methods of analysis and several applications of the theory
