TL;DR: A method for determining aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase induction in human leukocytes is described and 3-methylcholanthrene stimulation of increased enzymatic activity did not occur in the absence of a mitogenic agent.
Abstract: A method for determining aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase induction in human leukocytes is described. Leukocytes from healthy volunteers were cultured in the presence of phytohemagglutinin, a mitogen. Addition of 3-methylcholanthrene to 72-hour cultures induced a fourfold increase in aryl hydroxylase activity. In the absence of a mitogenic agent, 3-methylcholanthrene stimulation of increased enzymatic activity did not occur.

TL;DR: Determination of the NH2-terminal sequence proved difficult in view of a heterogeneity resulting from an apparent proteolytic degradation involving the first 6 residues, but this sequence was ultimately clarified by a study of the cyanogen bromide cleavage peptides released after attack at the methionine in position 8.

TL;DR: The ultrastructure of the tumor cells supports the conclusion that Ewing's sarcoma is a separate neoplastic entity different from reticulum cell Sarcoma and hemangiomatous neoplasms.
Abstract: Seven cases of Ewing's sarcoma of bone were examined by electron microscopy. The presence of atypical junction complexes represents a new finding. The presence of a considerable amount of glycogen confirms previous observations. The ultrastructure of the tumor cells supports the conclusion that Ewing's sarcoma is a separate neoplastic entity different from reticulum cell sarcoma and hemangiomatous neoplasms. Cells in tissue cultures derived from biopsies of Ewing's sarcoma showed no growth pattern nor morphological appearance different from cells of other malignant mesenchymal tumors. No virus particles could be detected in the primary surgical specimens nor in the tissue cultures. Filamentous structures were observed in one tumor biopsy specimen. These structures could be interpreted as structures resembling developmental stages of some known viruses.

TL;DR: A 13‐year‐old child presented with clinical signs and symptoms, developing over a year, of a large posterior fossa tumor that distorted the fourth ventricle and bulged into its right lateral recess, and demonstrated a schwannoma.
Abstract: A 13‐year‐old child presented with clinical signs and symptoms, developing over a year, of a large posterior fossa tumor. In addition to obliteration of the right cerebellopontine angle, the mass distorted the fourth ventricle and bulged into its right lateral recess. Pathologic examination by light and electron microscopy demonstrated a schwannoma. This represents the eighth reported case of a solitary intracranial schwannoma of the acoustic nerve in a child.

TL;DR: The present results indicate that the debranching system is an essential component of the particle, and suggest that it is a multi-enzyme complex designed for the complete degradation of glycogen.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Significantly more ethanol-derived acetate is incorporated into glutamine and GABA after a high ethanol dose than after a low dose, and acetate seems to be the principal source of radioactive carbon entering the amino acids.

TL;DR: An improved purification procedure for rabbit muscle amylo- 1,6-glucosidase/oligo-1,4 → 1,4- glucantranferase has been developed and removal of phosphorylase at an early stage in the purification allows the procedure to be considerably shortened and gives a higher yield.

TL;DR: A chromatographic procedure and different substrate concentrations were used to resolve the activities of the four hexokinase isozymes of rat liver and treatment of animals with high doses of thyroxine resulted in increased Hex I activity and decreased Hex IV (glucokinase) activity.
Abstract: SummaryA chromatographic procedure and different substrate concentrations were used to resolve the activities of the four hexokinase isozymes of rat liver. Animals rendered hypothyroid by radiothyroidectomy showed no significant changes in hexokinase isozyme activities after 14 days. Treatment of animals with high doses of thyroxine resulted in increased Hex I activity and decreased Hex IV (glucokinase) activity. Possible physiological consequences of these changes were discussed.

TL;DR: Residual red cell, plasma, and blood volumes were measured in the small vessels of nine major organs of the developing beagle, ranging in age from 4 hr to 7 months.
Abstract: SummaryResidual red cell, plasma, and blood volumes were measured in the small vessels of nine major organs of the developing beagle, ranging in age from 4 hr to 7 months. The animals were sacrificed by bleeding. The tissues analyzed were the heart, lung, kidney, spleen, liver, stomach, intestines, muscle, and skin. The data showed that these organs contain a significantly larger volume of the total blood volume in the newborn than in the 3- to 7-month-old dogs. In all age groups the muscle, skin, and liver contained the largest amount of blood, approximately 70% of the total organ blood volume. With the exception of the spleen, and in some cases the liver, the organ hematocrits for a particular age group were lower than the corresponding total body and the large vessel hematocrits.

TL;DR: Seventeen adult patients with nasal or paranasal sinus polyposis were studied in an attempt to determine whether there was any relationship between them and children with cystic fibrosis.
Abstract: Seventeen adult patients with nasal or paranasal sinus polyposis were studied in an attempt to determine whether there was any relationship between them and children with cystic fibrosis. The oyster gill cilia inhibition test, commonly used to detect the “C.F. factor” in the serum of cystic fibrosis patients (homozygous) and their parents (heterozygous), was applied to these 17 patients. Fourteen of the 17 patients had the “C.F. factor” in their serum. There would appear to be some relationship between cystic fibrosis and adult nasal and paranasal sinus polyposis; however, it is too early to draw any strong conclusions to this affect.

TL;DR: The adrenergic system is overstressed by the severe and prolonged cause of shock, leading to widespread arteriolar constriction, particularly in the splanchnic region, and ischemic damage of tissues in the liver, the reticulo-endothelial system, and the gut.
Abstract: During the past three decades, an hypothesis has evolved to explain the pathophysiology of lethal human shock states I shall refer to this hypothesis as the “adrenergic theory of shock” The adrenergic theory is widely accepted (2,6,7) In essence, the theory holds that the stress that produces shock—whether by blood loss, sepsis, myocardial infarction, or trauma—activates mechanisms in the body which initially restore arterial pressure and cardiac output back to normal Among these compensatory mechanisms is stimulation of the sympathetic nervous sytem and release of circulating catecholamines The adrenergic system is overstressed by the severe and prolonged cause of shock The result is widespread arteriolar constriction, particularly in the splanchnic region Poor perfusion of critical abdominal viscera ensues, leading to ischemic damage of tissues in the liver, the reticulo-endothelial system, and the gut Impaired defense processes, deranged metabolic activity, and loss of function of the intestinal barrier are major consequences of splanchnic vasoconstriction Toxic molecules, such as endotoxins, enter the circulation and cannot be cleared by normal defenses

TL;DR: The subjective feeling of dehydration and the actual swelling of the lower extremities characteristically found among passengers at the end of a long trip of this type seems to represent a shift in body fluids to the dependent portions of the body rather than water retention or a decrease in the intravascular water volume.
Abstract: Interstitial and intracellular fluid volumes were calculated from measured plasma volume, extracellular volume and total body water of six subjects before and after a 24-hour commercial overseas flight. No change occurred in these spaces or in peripheral hematocrit or total serum protein concentration. The subjective feeling of dehydration and the actual swelling of the lower extremities characteristically found among passengers at the end of a long trip of this type seems to represent a shift in body fluids to the dependent portions of the body rather than water retention or a decrease in the intravascular water volume.

TL;DR: The data showed that small percentage of partial reward led to greater resistance to extinction than did large percentage, which was interpreted as supporting Amsel's frustration hypothesis.
Abstract: Rats were trained in the straight runway under different percentages of partial reward and then extinguished. Within-day nonre ward-reward and reward-nonreward transitions were held constant during acquisition. The data showed that small percentage of partial reward led to greater resistance to extinction than did large percentage. The results were interpreted as supporting Amsel’s frustration hypothesis.
