Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common causes of death, despite decades of research. Initially considered as a disease due to genetic mutations, it is now viewed as a complex malignancy because of the involvement of epigenetic abnormalities. A functional equivalence between genetic and epigenetic mechanisms has been suggested in CRC initiation and progression. A hallmark of CRC is its pathogenetic heterogeneity attained through at least three distinct pathways: a traditional (adenoma-carcinoma sequence), an alternative, and more recently the so-called serrated pathway. While the alternative pathway is more heterogeneous and less characterized, the traditional and serrated pathways appear to be more homogeneous and clearly distinct. One unsolved question in colon cancer biology concerns the cells of origin and from which crypt compartment the different pathways originate. Based on molecular and pathological evidences, we propose that the traditional and serrated pathways originate from different crypt compartments explaining their genetic/epigenetic and clinicopathological differences. In this paper, we will discuss the current knowledge of CRC pathogenesis and, specifically, summarize the role of genetic/epigenetic changes in the origin and progression of the multiple CRC pathways. Elucidation of the link between the molecular and clinico-pathological aspects of CRC would improve our understanding of its etiology and impact both prevention and treatment.

Abstract: In this article, the results of a study aimed to assess the landslide susceptibility in the Calaggio Torrent basin (Campanian Apennines, southern Italy) are presented. The landslide susceptibility has been assessed using two bivariate-statistics-based methods in a GIS environment. In the first method, widely used in the existing literature, weighting values (Wi) have been calculated for each class of the selected causal factors (lithology, land-use, slope angle and aspect) taking into account the landslide density (detachment zones + landslide body) within each class. In the second method, which is a modification of the first method, only the landslide detachment zone (LDZ) density has been taken into account to calculate the weighting values. This latter method is probably characterized by a major geomorphological coherence. In fact, differently from the landslide bodies, LDZ must necessarily occur in geoenvironmental classes prone to failure. Thus, the calculated Wi seem to be more reliable in estimating the propensity of a given class to generate failure. The thematic maps have been reclassified on the basis of the calculated Wi and then overlaid, with the purpose to produce landslide susceptibility maps. The used methods converge both in indicating that most part of the study area is characterized by a high–very high landslide susceptibility and in the location and extent of the low-susceptible areas. However, an increase of both the high–very high and moderate–high susceptible areas occurs in using the second method. Both the produced susceptibility maps have been compared with the geomorphological map, highlighting an excellent coherence which is higher using method-2. In both methods, the percentage of each susceptibility class affected by landslides increases with the degree of susceptibility, as expected. However, the percentage at issue in the lowest susceptibility class obtained using method-2, even if low, is higher than that obtained using method-1. This suggests that method-2, notwithstanding its major geomorphological coherence, probably still needs further refinements.

Abstract: A brief overview of anchorage systems is dealt with introducing experimental tests on eight types of end fixing for reinforced polymers (FRP) sheets glued on RC elements. Particular test set-up and T-shaped specimens have been designed and realized to test mechanical fixings with steel or FRP plates glued or bolted, FRP bars or L-shaped fibers. The experimental results confirm that the various solutions have different performances in improving the debonding load. Numerical analysis confirm the reliability of debonding formulations available; furthermore a simple evaluation of anchorage effectiveness is proposed.

Abstract: During software maintenance and evolution the internal structure of the software system undergoes continuous changes. These modifications drift the source code away from its original design, thus deteriorating its quality, including cohesion and coupling of classes. Several refactoring methods have been proposed to overcome this problem. In this paper we propose a novel technique to identify Move Method refactoring opportunities and remove the Feature Envy bad smell from source code. Our approach, coined as Methodbook, is based on relational topic models (RTM), a probabilistic technique for representing and modeling topics, documents (in our case methods) and known relationships among these. Methodbook uses RTM to analyze both structural and textual information gleaned from software to better support move method refactoring. We evaluated Methodbook in two case studies. The first study has been executed on six software systems to analyze if the move method operations suggested by Methodbook help to improve the design quality of the systems as captured by quality metrics. The second study has been conducted with eighty developers that evaluated the refactoring recommendations produced by Methodbook. The achieved results indicate that Methodbook provides accurate and meaningful recommendations for move method refactoring operations.
