Abstract: We present the results of a directed search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown, isolated neutron stars in the Galactic Center region, performed on two years of data from LIGO's fifth science run from two LIGO detectors. The search uses a semi-coherent approach, analyzing coherently 630 segments, each spanning 11.5 hours, and then incoherently combining the results of the single segments. It covers gravitational wave frequencies in a range from 78 to 496 Hz and a frequency-dependent range of first order spindown values down to -7.86 x 10^-8 Hz/s at the highest frequency. No gravitational waves were detected. We place 90% confidence upper limits on the gravitational wave amplitude of sources at the Galactic Center. Placing 90% confidence upper limits on the gravitational wave amplitude of sources at the Galactic Center, we reach ~3.35x10^-25 for frequencies near 150 Hz. These upper limits are the most constraining to date for a large-parameter-space search for continuous gravitational wave signals.

Abstract: Analyzing the change-proneness of design patterns and the kinds of changes occurring to classes playing role(s) in some design pattern(s) during software evolution poses the basis for guidelines to help developers who have to choose, apply or maintain design patterns. Building on previous work, this paper shifts the focus from design patterns as wholes to the finer-grain level of design pattern roles. The paper presents an empirical study to understand whether there are roles that are more change-prone than others and whether there are changes that are more likely to occur to certain roles. The study relies on data extracted from the source code repositories of three different systems (JHotDraw, Xerces, and Eclipse-JDT) and from 12 design patterns. Results obtained confirm the intuitive behavior about changeability of many roles in design motifs, but also warns about properly designing parts of the motif subject to frequent changes.

Abstract: In this work the performance of an optoelectronic sensor system able to measure the concentration of organic analytes, in aqueous environment was analyzed. Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) in the nanoporous crystalline δ form was here used as sensitive polymeric layer due to its high sorption properties towards chlorinated and aromatic compounds. In particular, a thin semi-crystalline sPS film with crystalline nanoporous δ form was cast on the cleaved end of a standard fiber optic and measurements of reflectivity as the analyte was sorbed by the polymer were carried out allowing on-line detection of even very low concentrations (in the range of few ppm) of chloroform and toluene in water. The refractometer performance was compared with that of a classical resonant quartz-crystal microbalance sensor (QCM), using the same polymer as sensing element.

Abstract: This paper reviews briefly traditional rehabilitation methods and provides a detailed discussion of design issues along with the advantages and the disadvantages of innovative strategies for seismic retrofitting of steel and composite structures. Special emphasis is placed on base isolation and supplemental damping devices. The viability and cost-effectiveness of these strategies are assessed on the basis of multiple limit states within the framework of performance-based design. A number of parameters which govern the selection of the intervention devices are investigated.
