Abstract: The field that links immunity and metabolism is rapidly expanding. Apparently non-immunological disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes have been linked to immune dysregulation, suggesting that metabolic alterations can be induced by or be consequence of an altered self-immune tolerance. In this context, adipose tissue produces and releases a variety of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory factors, termed "adipokines," which can be considered as the bridge between obesity-related exogenous factors, such as nutrition and lifestyle, and the molecular events leading to metabolic syndrome, inflammatory, and/or autoimmune conditions. In obesity, increased production of most adipokines impacts on multiple functions such as appetite and energy balance, modulation of immune responses, insulin sensitivity, angiogenesis, blood pressure, lipid metabolism, and so on. This report aims to discuss some of the recent topics of adipocytokine research and their related signaling pathways, that may be of particular importance as could lead to effective therapeutic strategies for obesity-associated diseases.

Abstract: Software developers interact with APIs on a daily basis and, therefore, often face the need to learn how to use new APIs suitable for their purposes. Previous work has shown that recommending usage patterns to developers facilitates the learning process. Current approaches to usage pattern recommendation, however, still suffer from high redundancy and poor run-time performance. In this paper, we reformulate the problem of usage pattern recommendation in terms of a collaborative-filtering recommender system. We present a new tool, FOCUS, which mines open-source project repositories to recommend API method invocations and usage patterns by analyzing how APIs are used in projects similar to the current project. We evaluate FOCUS on a large number of Java projects extracted from GitHub and Maven Central and find that it outperforms the state-of-the-art approach PAM with regards to success rate, accuracy, and execution time. Results indicate the suitability of context-aware collaborative-filtering recommender systems to provide API usage patterns.

Abstract: Axially symmetric solutions for f (R)-gravity can be derived starting from exact spherically sym- metric solutions achieved by Noether symmetries. The method takes advantage of a complex coordi- nate transformation previously developed by Newman and Janis in General Relativity. An example is worked out to show the general validity of the approach. The physical properties of the solution are also considered.

Abstract: Run-time binding is an important and useful feature of Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), which aims at selecting, among functionally equivalent services, the ones that optimize some QoS objective of the overall application. To this aim, it is particularly relevant to forecast the QoS a service will likely exhibit in future invocations.This paper presents an empirical study aimed at comparing different approaches for QoS forecasting, namely the use of average and current values, linear models, and models based on time series. The study is performed on QoS data obtained by monitoring the execution of 10 real services for 4 months.Results show that, overall, the use of time series forecasting has the best compromise in ensuring a good prediction error, being sensible to outliers, and being able to predict likely violations of QoS constraints.

Abstract: Over the past several years, discoveries from mouse genetics have had direct impact on our understanding of vitamin A metabolism. Although the metabolism of vitamin A in the mouse does have some special features (for example very large stores of liver and pulmonary retinyl esters), the ability to construct knockout and transgenic mouse models has yielded an impressive amount of information directly relevant to understanding the general principles of vitamin A transport, storage and degradation. We discuss below the metabolism of vitamin A through a number of genetically engineered mouse strains with alterations in genes that affect this metabolism. The novelty of this experimental approach is evidenced by the fact that the oldest of these strains was first reported only eight years ago.1)
