Abstract: The time and the environment of formation of igneous rocks along the southern margin of the Yangtze continental block in southern Anhui Province and northeastern Jiangxi Province, China, are discussed. Sm-Nd dating for samples from two ophiolite suites give ages of about 1 Ga. Late Proterozoic granodiorites in the study area have ages of about 0.9 Ga and have normal intrusive relations against Banxi Group metamorphic country rocks. Trace element abundances and initial Nd isotope ratios for ophiolite and Proterozoic granodiorites are consistent with formation in an island-arc environment. In contrast, Sr and Nd isotopes for Mesozoic granitoids of the region suggest that they are products of remelting of crustal sources similar to the basement of the Yangtze block. These relations do not support a recently proposed Mesozoic overthrust tectonic model for southeast China, but rather favor a late Precambrian collision history for the Yangtze and Cathysia blocks.

Abstract: The three-dimensional waving plate theory is developed to investigate the swimming performance of fish undulatory motion. In particular, the propulsive effectiveness is discussed. The unsteady potential flow over model rectangular and triangular flexible plates performing a motion which consists of a progressing wave with variable amplitudes is calculated by the vortex ring panel method. It is found that the undulatory motion can reduce three-dimensional effects. It is this important hydrodynamic phenomenon that may be one of the main reasons why such undulation is widely used as the swimming method by a large number of aquatic animals. When the span of the undulating plate is nearly unchanged and the wave amplitude is constant or increases slightly along the chord, and the wavelength is close to the body length, theoretical results show that the swimming performance is best and the flow around the plate has a quasi-two-dimensional property. This swimming method may be observed in many fishes, especially those with an anguilliform mode of propulsion. The modification of the anguilliform mode of propulsion to the carangiform mode is also discussed. It is confirmed that the pronounced necking of the body anterior to the tail, which acts to improve the propulsive performance, is a major morphological adaptation of fishes using the carangiform mode, in which the characteristic nature of flexural movement confined to the rear part of the body is that the amplitude of undulation increases posteriorly and no complete wavelength is at any time apparent.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new layered cuprate, TaSr 2 (NdCe) 2 Cu 2 O y (1222 phase), was designed and successfully synthesized.
Abstract: A new layered cuprate, TaSr 2 (NdCe) 2 Cu 2 O y has been designed and successfully synthesized. The structure of the compound has been determined by the powder X-ray diffraction method. By indexing of the diffraction patterns, the cell parameters were found to be a = 3.881 A and c = 28.93 A, with a possible space group I 4/mmm . Comparison of the calculated and observed diffraction intensities reveals that the structure is directly related to the TlBa 2 (LnCe) 2 Cu 2 O y (1222 phase) with Ta replacing Tl. Measurement of the resistance from room temperature to 77 K showed that the compound was a narrow-gap semiconductor.

Abstract: The basic principle of the thermal conductivity probe is described. Thin probes were developed based on this principle, with a reproducibility of 5.3% and relative error less than 6.0%. Each measurement can be completed in 90 s and the temperature increase can be controlled within 2 degrees C. Using the probes, the thermal conductivities of pig fat, meat, liver, kidney and live and dead snake head were measured and it was found that water content plays an important role in influencing the magnitude of the thermal conductivity of biological tissues. The probe can be used over a temperature range from -40 to 150 degrees C.

Abstract: We have studied the reactionse+e−→hadrons,e+e−, μ+ μ− and τ+ τ−, in the energy range 88.2\( \leqq \sqrt s \leqq 94.2\) GeV. A total luminosity of 5.5 pb−1, corresponding to approximately 115000 hadronic and 10000 leptonicZ0 decays, has been recorded with the L3 detector. TL;DR: A Blocked Back-Propagation (BB-P) algorithm was proposed arid described in this Letter and it improved convergence performance and classification accuracy.
Abstract: Abstract. Artificial neural networks have been used recently for speech and character recognition. Their application for the classification of remotely-sensed images is reported in this Letter. Remotely sensed image data are usually large in size and spectral overlaps among classes of ground objects are common. This results in low convergence performance of the Back-Propagation Algorithm in a neural network classifier. A Blocked Back-Propagation (BB-P) algorithm was proposed arid described in this Letter. It improved convergence performance and classification accuracy.

TL;DR: Iontophoretic applications of GABA or baclofen indicated no major depression of responses during anoxia, suggesting it is unlikely that the anoxic suppression of IPSPs is caused by desensitizations of GABA receptors.
Abstract: In rat hippocampal slices GABAergic IPSPs are very rapidly suppressed by anoxia (in<2 min). Both early (GABAA) and late (GABAB) components are affected. After reoxygenation, the IPSPs recover, but only slowly and not always completely. Iontophoretic applications of GABA or baclofen indicated no major depression of responses during anoxia. It is therefore unlikely that the anoxic suppression of IPSPs is caused by desensitizations of GABA receptors. A more probable explanation is a failure of GABAergic neurons to release GABA from inhibitory nerve terminals.

Abstract: A millimetre-wave omnidirectional circular dielectric rod grating antenna is investigated theoretically and experimentally. As an eigenvalue problem, the antenna is analyzed with the rigorous mode matching method. The radiation characteristics of the antenna are calculated and measured in the Ka-band frequency range. A comparison between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions is made and good agreement is found. The practicality of the omnidirectional antenna and the effectiveness of the theory are thus justified. >

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived a kinetic equation for the reaction in photocrosslinking of the low density polyethylene-benzophenone-triallyl cyanurate (LDPE-BP-TAC) system and compared it with the results from crosslinking, extraction and swelling experiments.
Abstract: The kinetics of the reaction in photocrosslinking of the low density polyethylene-benzophenone-triallyl cyanurate (LDPE-BP-TAC) system was studied by theoretically deriving a kinetic equation and comparing it with the results from crosslinking, extraction and swelling experiments. It was found that the rate of crosslinking is proportional to the square of light intensity. The roles of the crosslinker (TAC) were to capture the excited initiators efficiently to form free radicals and to act as a carrier of the active radicals. The ratio of degradation/ crosslinking was extrapolated to be around 0.28, and compared with 0.44 in the γ-irradiation process for the same material.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of various notching methods on the life time of slow crack failure at 80 °C for a tough gas pipe grade of polyethylene was investigated, and the standard notching procedure involved pressing an ordinary razor blade into the single-edge notched tensile specimen at a rate of 50 μm min−1 at room temperature.
Abstract: The effect of various notching methods on the life time of slow crack failure at 80 °C for a tough gas pipe grade of polyethylene was investigated. The standard notching procedure involved pressing an ordinary razor blade into the single-edge notched tensile specimen at a rate of 50 μm min−1 at room temperature. The other notching methods involved using a sharper razor blade, cooling in liquid nitrogen, pre-cracking by fatigue, slicing with a scalpel, or using a rotary cutter. The standard procedure gave a life time of 28000 min under a stress of 2.4 MPa; the sharper blade, cooling in liquid nitrogen, and pre-cracking by fatigue gave an equivalent life time. Slicing with a scalpel or a rotary cutter provided a much longer life time.

Abstract: The fundamental solutions of the orthotropic thick plates taking into account the transverse shear deformation are derived by means of Hormander's operator method and a plane-wave decomposition of the Dirac δ-function in this papey. The boundary integral equations of the thick plates have been formulated which are adapted to arbitrary boundary conditions and plane forms. The numerical calculation of the fundamental solutions is discussed in detail. Some numerical examples are analyzed with BEM.

Abstract: A dynamic torsional vibration method has been developed and used to investigate the isothermal cure processes of resin system of epoxy resin–boron trifluoride monoethylamine complexSiO2, optimizing its cure conditions and estimating the apparent dynamic parameters including gel time and rate of cure reaction and discussing the effect of filler on cure. The cure behavior of resin system has been predicted by the nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory. The theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the experimental results obtained by dynamic torsional vibration method.

TL;DR: In this paper, a metasomatism which produced an enrichment of strongly incompatible elements was superimposed on a depleted source shortly prior to a melting event, leading to the formation of the Shandong basalts.
Abstract: Cenozoic alkali basaltic rocks from the central and eastern parts of Shandong province, eastern China include alkali basalts, basanites and olivine nephelinites, some of which contain spinel peridotite xenoliths and megacrysts predominantly of clinopyroxene and anorthoclase. The abundances and ratios of incompatible elements in the basalts are similar to those of many continental and oceanic island alkali basalts. The magmas were derived from metasomatised garnet-clinopyroxene-bearing peridotites by variable but small degrees of melting. A metasomatism which produced an enrichment of strongly incompatible elements was superimposed on a depleted source shortly prior to a melting event. The basaltic rocks from the central and eastern regions have distinct major and trace element characteristics and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions. The Eastern Shandong lavas have higher abundances of Na, P and incompatible trace elements but are lower in Mg and compatible trace elements than those from the central part. The source of the Eastern Shandong basalts was relatively homogeneous in Sr and Pb isotopic compositions and was metasomatically enriched, at least in part, by carbonate-rich fluids. Phlogopite and probably apatite remained in the residue after the extraction of Eastern Shandong nephelinites. The basaltic rocks of Central Shandong were generated from a heterogeneous multicomponent source. δ18O values negate a significant role of upper crustal contamination in the genesis of the Shandong basalts. The compositional similarities between the Shandong continental alkali basaltic lavas and continental and oceanic island alkali basalts suggest that their mantle parents were metasomatically enriched by fluids derived from the same source—rising asthenospheric plumes.

TL;DR: The d-d transition spectra of Cu(TTA)2 and Cu2(sacch)4(Im)4 complexes have been determined using the crystal structure data as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The d-d transition spectra of Cu(TTA)2 and Cu2(sacch)4(Im)4 complexes crystals have been determined. Using the crystal structure data, their d-d transition energy levels are calculated by the program which we used for the calculation of field theory. The calculated values are in good accordance with the experimental results. Compared to the copper(II) complexes in various coordination environments, their d-d transition spectra have an evident difference.

Abstract: A harmonious coloring of a simple graph G is a coloring of the vertices such that adjacent vertices receive distinct colors and each pair of colors appears together on at most one edge. The harmonious chromatic number h(G) is the least number of colors in such a coloring. We improve an upper bound on h(G) due to Lee and Mitchem, and give upper bounds for related quantities.
