TL;DR: It is shown that a single H–2 locus is pleiomorphic in that it controls several functions such as allograft rejection, cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity, mixed lymphocyte reaction, immune response, immune suppression and restriction of T-cell specificity.
Abstract: The H-2 complex has traditionally been interpreted as a maze of regions, subregions and loci coding for different traits. The two main theses presented here are, first, that a single H-2 locus is pleiomorphic in that it controls several functions such as allograft rejection, cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity, mixed lymphocyte reaction, immune response, immune suppression and restriction of T-cell specificity; and second, that the physiological function of the H-2 complex is to guide T lymphocytes in their function of distinguishing self from non-self, and that all other H-2-controlled traits are artificial derivatives of this basic function. These two theses lead to a new, simplified interpretation of the H-2 complex.

TL;DR: Total tumour mass score was a significant prognostic factor even when adjustment was performed for age, sex, lymphocyte count, response to therapy, TTM‐distribution pattern and bone marrow failure, suggesting that TTM is a better indicator of tumour cell burden than the lymphocytes count.
Abstract: Total tumour mass score (TTM) is introduced as a new parameter in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) in order to assess the tumour mass within all major body compartments. TTM is the sum of: (1) the square root of the number of peripheral blood lymphocytes per nl, (2) the diameter of the largest palpable lymph node in centimetres, and (3) the enlargement of the spleen below left costal margin in centimetres. The validity of the proposed scoring system was evaluated in a prognostic study of 256 CLL patients. Patients with high TTM (greater than 9.0) at presentation had the expected median survival (EMS) of 39 months whereas patients with low TTM (less than 8.9) had EMS of 101 months (P less than 0.0005). TTM was a significant prognostic factor even when adjustment was performed for age, sex, lymphocyte count, response to therapy, TTM-distribution pattern and bone marrow failure. In contrast, the lymphocyte count was not prognostically significant when adjustment was performed for TTM. This suggests that TTM is a better indicator of tumour cell burden than the lymphocyte count. TTM measurement enables the analysis of the tumour mass size independently of other factors. TTM is a simple, objective parameter that can be measured as a continuous quantitative variable allowing derivation of new factors. TTM-doubling time and TTM-response to therapy were significant for prognosis (P less than 0.0005). The proposed scoring system can also be used for the study of the tumour mass distribution pattern.

Abstract: The nature of the phase transition to the superionic phase of cuprous selenide has been investigated by measuring thermal expansion, electron diffraction, and electronic conductivity The degenerate nature of the transition has been demonstrated by introducing controlled deviations from stoichiometry The origin of this first-order phase transition is interpreted in terms of the formation of a modulated ion distribution along the [111] cubic axis

TL;DR: Subcostal two dimensional echocardiography has advantages over fluoroscopy in the determination of pacing catheter position and in controlling the advancement of electrode catheters in intracardiac electrophysiologic studies.
Abstract: To assess the value of subcostal echocardiography in determining the position of a right ventricular pacing catheter, M mode and two dimensional echocardiography was performed from four different locations in 30 patients. Subcostal M mode echocardiography had a higher detection rate of the pacing catheter than did the precordial M mode examination. However, with M mode echocardiography it was not possible to determine the position of the pacing catheter from any of the locations. The subcostal two dimensional echocardiography demonstrated the full length of the pacing catheter in the right heart chambers and its anatomic position in all patients and proved superior to the precordial approach. This technique allowed the detection of complications related to pacing catheters. A pacing catheter ejected from the ventricular cavity was found in the inferior vena cava. Perforation of the ventricular septum with a bipolar electrode for temporary pacing was also diagnosed. Subcostal two dimensional echocardiography was used in 20 patients as an additional technique for controlling the advancement of electrode catheters in right heart intracardiac electrophysiologic studies. The electrode catheters were successfully positioned at all routine sites in all patients except one. Thus, subcostal two dimensional echocardiography has advantages over fluoroscopy in the determination of pacing catheter position and in controlling the advancement of electrode catheters in intracardiac electrophysiologic studies.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated here that the EαEβ complex (the E molecule) can evoke in vitro cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity (CML) without previous sensitization in vivo, and that the strong CML reactivity is directed against allele-specific determinants on the highly polymorphic Eβ chain.
Abstract: The serologically detectable molecules encoded by the H-2 complex, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the mouse, fall into two classes-class I and class II (ref. 1). The class I molecules encoded by the K and D loci have a molecular weight of 44,000 and are noncovalently associated with beta 2 microglobulin which is not controlled by the MHC. The class II molecules are of two kinds, A and E, each consisting of two noncovalently associated polypeptide chains, alpha (Mr approximately 34,000) and beta (Mr approximately 28,000). Three of the four chains, A alpha, A beta and E beta, are controlled by loci in the I-A subregion, whereas the locus controlling the E alpha chain is located in the I-E subregion of the H-2 complex. Thus the loci coding for the E alpha and E beta chains are separated by at least one (J) and perhaps more loci. It has been shown that the E alpha and E beta chains are synthesized independently, and that the E alpha chain is required for the insertion of the E beta chain in the plasma membrane. We demonstrate here that the E alpha E beta complex (the E molecule) can evoke in vitro cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity (CML) without previous sensitization in vivo, and that the strong CML reactivity is directed against allele-specific determinants on the highly polymorphic E beta chain.

TL;DR: The efficient histogenesis in grafts of dissected primary ectoderm and the atypical morphogenetic behaviour of grafted primary and definitive rat embryonic ectoderman were discussed in the light of current concepts on mosaic and regulative development, interactive events during embryogenesis and positioning and patterning of cells by controlled morphogenetics cell displacement.
Abstract: Halves of transversely or longitudinally cut primary ectoderm of the pre-primitive streak and the early primitive streak rat embryonic shield developed after 15–30 days in renal homografts into benign teratomas composed of various adult tissues, often in perfect organspecific associations. No clear difference exists in histological composition of grafted halves of the same embryonic ectoderm. The primary ectoderm of the pre-primitive streak rat embryonic shield grafted under the kidney capsule for 2 days displayed an atypical morphogenetic behaviour, characterized by diffuse breaking up of the original epithelial layer into mesenchyme. Some of these cells associated into cystic or tubular epithelial structures. The definitive ectoderm of the head-fold-stage rat embryo grown as renal homograft for 1–3 days gave rise to groups of mesenchymal cells. These migrated from the basal side of the ectoderm in a manner which mimicked either the formation of the embryonic mesoderm or the initial migration of neural crest cells. This latter morphogenetic activity was retained in the entire nejjral epithelium of the early somite embryo but was only seen in the caudal open portion of the neural groove at the 10- to 12-somite stage. The efficient histogenesis in grafts of dissected primary ectoderm and the atypical morphogenetic behaviour of grafted primary and definitive rat embryonic ectoderm were discussed in the light of current concepts on mosaic and regulative development, interactive events during embryogenesis and positioning and patterning of cells by controlled morphogenetic cell displacement.

TL;DR: Ethanol in some persons may act, at least partly, through releasing mediators with bronchoconstrictive action, to act as a ‘spatially aggregating force’ to reduce flow rates.
Abstract: Summary The acute effect of ethanol inhalation on ventilatory capacity was studied in a group of six healthy volunteers and the results were compared to those obtained after the inhalation of a saline solution There was a significant decrease in flow rates on partial expiratory flow-volume (PEFV) curves up to 90 min after ethanol inhalation FEV1 values did not change significantly, either after ethanol or saline aerosol Pretreatment with atropine did not prevent the acute reductions in flow rates in comparison with the reductions without atropine Pretreatment with disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) considerably diminished the acute reductions of flow rates caused by ethanol inhalation These results suggest that ethanol in some persons may act, at least partly, through releasing mediators with bronchoconstrictive action

Abstract: Vicia faba callus line (VFS 1), isolated from expiants of immature embryo, grew satisfactorily onMurashige andSkoog complete medium with 1.38 μM 2,4-D, or with 0.92 μM 2,4-D to which 1.0 μM kinetin was added. It also grew well on the B 5 modified medium containing 2.3 μM 2,4-D and 25.0 μM kinetin. On the last of these media the cultures grew more uniformly and without necrosis. They also showed diminishing variation in polyploidy in favour of diploids and corresponding aneuploids (hypodiploids). After being cultured for nearly three years on MS containing 1.38 μM 2,4-D, 8–33% of cultures of VFS 1 were able to regenerate roots when transferred to either MS half strength with 5.37 μM NAA, or to a medium without 2,4-D, or else to media with the addition of kinetin only (in various concentrations).

TL;DR: In this paper, relative reflectance spectra of microcrystalline HgI2 powder are made between 15000 and 27000 cm−l, at temperatures from ≈ 5 to 530 K.
Abstract: Relative diffuse reflectance spectra of microcrystalline HgI2 powder are made between 15000 and 27000 cm−l, at temperatures from ≈ 5 to 530 K. They are transformed into Kubelka-Munk function spectra. α-HgI2 shows exciton absorption and emission spectra as well as a strong lu- minescence band at 17860 cm−l at ≈ 5 K which shifts to 18700 cm−l at 80 K. Three new low temperature phases are observed when β-HgI2, is quenched from temperatures above 400 K to 80 or 4.2 K. Diffuse relative Reflexionspektren von mikrokristallinem HgI2-Pulver werden im Bereich von 15000 bis 27000 cm−1 bei Temperaturen von ≈ 5 bis 530 K aufgenommen.

TL;DR: Insulin binding to specific erythrocyte receptors was investigated in group of 25 subjects with Klinefelter's syndrome and 14 healthy male volunteers and indicated a compensatory, mechanism involved in the glucose metabolism in KlineFelter’s syndrome.
Abstract: Insulin binding to specific erythrocyte receptors was investigated in a group of 25 subjects with Klinefelter's syndrome (47 XXY genotype) and 14 healthy male volunteers. Insulin binding was significantly decreased in Klinefelter subjects (P < 0.01 at insulin concentrations of 0.051 and 0.136 mmol/ liter); however, their fasting glucose concentration was normal (87 % 17), and the glucose disappearance rate was slightly increased (2.3 % 0.9; P < 0.2). These data indicated a compensatory mechanism involved in the glucose metabolism in Klinefelter's syndrome.
