TL;DR: The British Gliding Association (B.G.A) as discussed by the authors was the first association of flying clubs in the UK, which was formed in the early nineteen twenties by German pilots, banned by the Treaty of Versailles from constructing or flying powered aircraft.
Abstract: Gliding as a sport dates from the early nineteen twenties when German pilots, banned by the Treaty of Versailles from constructing or flying powered aircraft, turned their attention to constructing sailplanes. Their progress was remarkable and, after visits by some of their best pilots to England in 1929, many clubs were formed here together with an association of clubs, the British Gliding Association. Many of these clubs lasted only a few months but by 1937 a few were in a strong position and in November 1937 Squadron Leader (now Group Captain) Buxton gave a lecture to the Society reviewing developments up to that date. Developments in gliding are well recorded in the Journal of the B.G.A., Gliding, and in the other aeronautical periodicals, but it is proper that the Society should record periodically progress made in this branch of flying.

Abstract: This expository paper is intended to provide engineering and technology students with a purely visual and intuitive approach to differential calculus. The plan is that students who see intuitively the benefits of the strategies of calculus will be encouraged to master the algebraic form changing techniques such as solving, factoring and completing the square. Differential calculus will be treated as a continuation of the study of branches11 of continuous and smooth curves described by equations which was initiated in a pre-calculus or advanced algebra course. Functions are defined as the single valued expressions which describe the branches of the curves. Derivatives are secondary functions derived from the just mentioned functions in order to obtain the slopes of the lines tangent to the curves. The derivatives of the derivatives are related to the turning of the tangent lines. The concepts involved in the study of continuous curves are not difficult to comprehend. But parsing complexity arises from the many combinations of forms, kinds and operations on functions. The paper will focus on the properties of continuous and smooth curves while maintaining an organized topic structure. Subsequently a student, enabled with the goals and structure of a course in differential calculus, can refer to conventional texts to fill in and expand on subordinate details.

01 Jan 2012TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of temperature on the ballistic limit of woven graphite/epoxy composite panels (6 in. × 4 in., 0.25 in.) at five different temperatures: −60 C, −20 C, R.T, 75 C and 125 C was investigated.
Abstract: This paper investigates the effect of temperature on the ballistic limit of woven graphite/epoxy composite panels (6 in. × 4 in. × 0.25 in.) at five different temperatures: −60 C, −20 C, R.T, 75 C and 125 C. The studies were conducted by combining experimental and 3-D dynamic finite element approaches. The specimens tested were made of plain-weave IM7graphite fibers/toughened epoxy. The composite panels were impacted using an in-house gas gun. The time-histories of impact-induced dynamic strains were recorded. The damaged specimens were inspected visually and using the ultrasonic C scan method. A 3-D dynamic finite element (FE) software, with Chang-Chang composite damage model, was then used to simulate the experimental results of the ballistic impact tests. Good agreement between experimental and FE results has been achieved.

TL;DR: A new robust high-degree Cubature Kalman filtering algorithm is proposed, which takes into account the nonlinearity of the system and non-gaussian noise, and improves the measurement updating process by using the Maximum correntropy criterion and converts the traditional measurement updating problem into the linear regressione quation solving problem.
Abstract: As the integrated navigation system is a nonlinear system, in the case of non-gaussian noise, the traditional nonlinear gaussian filtering algorithm has a serious problem of decreasing filtering precision. In this paper, a new robust high-degree Cubature Kalman filtering algorithm is proposed, which takes into account the nonlinearity of the system and non-gaussian noise. The algorithm improves the measurement updating process by using the Maximum correntropy criterion(MCC), and converts the traditional measurement updating problem into the linear regressione quation solving problem. Combines the advantages of Maximum correntropy criterion and Cubature Kalman filter to deal with non-Gaussian and nonlinear systems. The proposed algorithm is applied to the SINS/GPS integrated navigation system, the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm's filtering performance is greatly affected by the kernel width. Under the condition of gaussian mixture noise, the new robust high-degree Cubature Kalman filter based on Maximum correntropy criterion(MCC-HCKF) is more robust and has higher filtering precision than the traditional high-degree Cubature Kalman filter(HCKF).
