TL;DR: In this paper, the opportunities and challenges of leveraging transit-oriented development (TOD) through bus rapid transit investments through BRT investments are investigated. But, despite the successes of cities like Curitiba and Ottawa at integrating BRT and land development, doubt remains over BRT's ability to promote less car-dependent, more sustainable patterns of urban growth in rapidly motorizing and suburbanizing cities.

Journal ArticleDOI

129 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimate the output elasticity of port infrastructure through production function, applying panel data analysis for the period of 1999-2010, and calculate the model at the level of four port regions as well as the port province level.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the drivers for alternative fuels in the light of the needs of aviation and provide criteria wherein potential alternative jet fuels can be compared, and qualitatively examine a wide range of transportation fuels using these criteria.

126 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on hybrid choice models of the type increasingly being used by travel demand modelers, which include latent perception and attitude related variables, and argue that, contrary to current practice, these models do not support the derivation of policies that aim to change travel behavior by means of changing the value of a latent variable.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a hierarchical approach for categorizing transport-related information harvested from social media is presented, based on the understanding of the nature of social media content, the goals in harvesting it for transport planning and management purposes and existing text mining techniques.

123 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a review and assessment of Eco-Driving policy and its claimed benefits is presented, and the possible negative impacts of eco-driving, often neglected in previous research, are also highlighted.

121 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Based on the most updated available data on Chinese logistics and economy, this paper used the dynamic structural model to test the relationship between logistics development and economic growth in both the short and long run from a total output, demand and disaggregate output perspective.

118 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: This study models the impacts of urban features and system characteristics on bikesharing daily use and turnover rate in China and suggests that personal credit cards and universal cards and integration into other urban transit systems through the use of a rechargeable smart card can significantly raise biksharing daily Use and Turnover rate.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) has been promoted as a transport solution in circumstances where more traditional services are not economically viable, although so far a range of barriers has prevented its widespread adoption as mentioned in this paper.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a slacks-based data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) model was used to assess the environmental efficiency of port cities, and the results showed that Singapore, Busan, Rotterdam, Kaohsiung, Antwerp, and New York are the most environmentally efficient port cities.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is found that more stringent driving restrictions had a positive impact on city-wide traffic speed, but little effect on the concentration of inhalable particulates, implying that positive traffic and environmental effects of a policy may not go hand in hand.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an empirical, econometric analysis of air travel demand in Europe, utilizing an expanded data set to explore: (1) the impact of rail travel times, population density, and market characteristics on air traffic; and (2) impact of high-speed rail and low-cost carriers on system-wide air traffic.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the ACARE and NASA targets for emissions reduction with the benefits available from combining present-day technology with behavioural change, and concluded that significant future gains are achievable, but not to the extent implied by the NASA targets, which represent an unrealistically optimistic view of technological potential.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A novel framework is presented which integrates statistical analysis, SERVQUAL, interval type-2 fuzzy sets and VIKOR to evaluate customer satisfaction level for the rail transit network of Istanbul and provides directions for the future investments.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors take a scale development approach to conceptualize, develop and test a multiple-item scale for measuring the travel experience from a defined holistic perspective, analyzing its perceptual dimensions and outcomes based on a quantitative study with 1226 passengers of a mid-distance bus transportation service.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated whether and how multiple-criteria decision analysis, based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach, may support the participatory process of the public in the whole transportation planning process, especially in strategic planning and at the initial stages during which planning options are drawn up and the public are rarely involved.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the development of cycling policies and the changing use of the bicycle as a mode of daily transport between 2002 and 2008 in four German cities: Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the effects of built-environment variables on the use of non-motorized travel modes, including vehicle ownership levels, intrazonal trip-making, destination and mode choices, nonmotorised trip counts per household, and miles traveled.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the current status of knowledge regarding the contribution of aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing and compare the emissions and associated radiative forcings from aviation are compared to those from other modes of transport.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the results of a study on the state of urban freight transport policies and planning among Swedish local authorities and compare the results with existing research in the European context in order to find possible links between the freight transport awareness and the successes or failures of measures addressing urban freight transportation issues.
