In this paper, two fuzzy versions of the k-means optimal, least squared error partitioning problem are formulated for finite subsets X of a general inner product space, and the extremizing solutions are shown to be fixed points of a certain operator T on the class of fuzzy, k-partitions of X, and simple iteration of T provides an algorithm which has the descent property relative to the LSE criterion function.
Abstract
Two fuzzy versions of the k-means optimal, least squared error partitioning problem are formulated for finite subsets X of a general inner product space. In both cases, the extremizing solutions are shown to be fixed points of a certain operator T on the class of fuzzy, k-partitions of X, and simple iteration of T provides an algorithm which has the descent property relative to the least squared error criterion function. In the first case, the range of T consists largely of ordinary (i.e. non-fuzzy) partitions of X and the associated iteration scheme is essentially the well known ISODATA process of Ball and Hall. However, in the second case, the range of T consists mainly of fuzzy partitions and the associated algorithm is new; when X consists of k compact well separated (CWS) clusters, Xi , this algorithm generates a limiting partition with membership functions which closely approximate the characteristic functions of the clusters Xi . However, when X is not the union of k CWS clusters, the limi...

Fuzzy rule induction in a set covering framework

TL;DR: This paper presents a set covering framework for concept learning using fuzzy sets, and develops an algorithm, FUZZYBEXA, based on this approach to induce fuzzy classification rules from data, which shows that highly accurate and comprehensible rules are induced.

Exploring What Is Encoded in Distributional Word Vectors: A Neurobiologically Motivated Analysis.

TL;DR: It is shown that word vectors can capture some types of perceptual and spatiotemporal information about concrete concepts and some relevant word categories, suggesting that language statistics can encode more perceptual knowledge than often expected.

Understanding patterns of evolution acceptance—A new implementation of the Measure of Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution (MATE) with Midwestern university students

TL;DR: The Measure of Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution (MATE) is validated on undergraduate students using the Rasch model and the MATE is explored qualitatively how students express their acceptance of evolution, corroborating previous claims that teaching macroevolution may be one way to improve students’ acceptance.

Multi-kernel fuzzy clustering based on auto-encoder for fMRI functional network

TL;DR: The proposed fuzzy multi-kernel clustering method based on auto-encoder is realized by updating the membership matrix and coefficients of these kernels until the value of objective function is iterated to the minimum error and achieves high dimension reduction of input data.
