Abstract
RI Manager (Manly and Elliott, 1991) is a microcomputer program to assist genetic mapping in experimental organisms by providing functions for convenient data collection, organization, and analysis. It has been under development since 1988, and new features are constantly being added. This review presents the current capabilities of the program and some of the principles that are guiding its development. RI Manager was originally developed specifically for data from recombinant inbred strains of mice (Taylor 1989). It has since been extended to analyze data from backcrosses, and it will be extended further to ana lyze F 2 data. To include these additional functions, the program is now being called Map Manager, and this name will be used throughout this review. The functions of Map Manager can be divided, somewhat arbitrarily, into analysis functions and database functions. The database functions are those which allow a user to organize and manipulate mapping data conveniently. The presence of these functions distinguishes Map Manager from other mapping programs. This review will describe the analysis and database functions separately.

Microcytic anaemia mice have a mutation in Nramp2, a candidate iron transporter gene.

TL;DR: A positional cloning strategy is undertaken to identify the causative mutation in mice with microcytic anaemia, and it is suggested that the phenotype is a consequence of a missense mutation in Nramp2 (ref. 5), a previously identified gene of unknown function.

Identification of a gene encoding an acyl CoA:diacylglycerol acyltransferase, a key enzyme in triacylglycerol synthesis

TL;DR: An expressed sequence tag clone that shared regions of similarity with acyl CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase, an enzyme that also uses fatty acyl coA as a substrate was identified, which will greatly facilitate studies of cellular glycerolipid metabolism and its regulation.

Analysis of human genetic linkage

TL;DR: In this age of modern era, the use of internet must be maximized, as one of the benefits is to get the on-line analysis of human genetic linkage book, as the world window, as many people suggest.

MAPMAKER: An interactive computer package for constructing primary genetic linkage maps of experimental and natural populations

TL;DR: A computer package, called MAPMAKER, designed specifically for the construction of linkage maps in a number of organisms, including the human and several plants, and it is outlined the mapping strategies that have been used.

The estimation of map distances from recombination values.

TL;DR: The genetic map is a tool to quantify the distance between genes on a chromosome, based on the observed frequency of crossovers during cell division, which is used to estimate the total distance between chromosomes.

Mapping mendelian factors underlying quantitative traits using rflp linkage maps

TL;DR: In this paper, a set of analytical methods that modify and extend the classical theory for mapping such quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are described, and explicit graphs are provided that allow experimental geneticists to estimate, in any particular case, the number of progeny required to map QTLs underlying a quantitative trait.

TL;DR: The first and still the only book of its kind, this volume offers a concise introduction to human genetic linkage analysis and gene mapping and introduces the reader to many of the intricate aspects of complex traits.
