Journal ArticleDOI

Short-term starvation and mitochondrial dysfunction – A possible mechanism leading to postoperative insulin resistance

TL;DR: There is evidence from animal studies that short-term starvation causes mitochondrial dysfunction, and evidence from human studies suggests that the development of insulin resistance during starvation may be linked to impaired mitochondrial function.
Journal ArticleDOI

Preoperative carbohydrate loading for elective surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis

TL;DR: CHO appears to be safe, and may attenuate postoperative insulin resistance as compared to placebo, however, the quality of most of the published trials has been poor, and the evidence levels for most outcomes were low, so rigorous and larger RCTs are needed in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of preoperative carbohydrate loading on hormonal changes, hepatic glycogen, and glucoregulatory enzymes during abdominal surgery

TL;DR: The finding of enhanced FDPase activity suggests that the indirect route (via gluconeogenesis) represents an important contributor to the increased glycogen formation during glucose infusion, and preoperative high-dose glucose infusion has only minor effects on the endocrine response, plasma levels of FFA, and glycogen depletion during elective open cholecystectomy.
