Solid-state fermentation — are there any biotechnological advantages?
Udo Hölker,Jürgen Lenz +1 more
TL;DR: With increasing progress and application of rational methods in engineering, SSF will achieve higher levels in standardisation and reproducibility in the future, which can make SSF the preferred technique for special fields of application such as the production of enzymes and food.
Journal ArticleDOI
Application of solid-state fermentation to ligninolytic enzyme production
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of the production of ligninolytic enzymes by Solid State Fermentation (SSF) technique, which has become an attractive alternative to submerged fermentation (SmF) for specific applications due to the recent improvements in reactor designs.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Arrhenius Equation Revisited
TL;DR: The use of the exponential model or similar empirical alternative would eliminate the confusing temperature axis inversion, the unnecessary compression of the temperature scale, and the need for kinetic assumptions that are hard to affirm in food systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Visualization and curve-parameter estimation strategies for efficient exploration of phenotype microarray kinetics.
TL;DR: A comprehensive framework for data visualization and parameter estimation according to user choices is provided, and a flexible graphical representation strategy for displaying the results is proposed, including 95% confidence intervals for the estimated parameters.

Pectinase production from lemon peel pomace as support and carbon source in solid-state fermentation column-tray bioreactor
Héctor A. Ruiz,Rosa M. Rodríguez-Jasso,Raúl Rodríguez,Juan C. Contreras-Esquivel,Cristóbal N. Aguilar +4 more
TL;DR: The use of lemon peel pomace and the use of A. niger Aa-20 in SSF suggest as a very promising process for pectinase production.

Heat transfer simulation in solid substrate fermentation
Gerardo Saucedo-Castañeda,Mariano Gutiérrez-Rojas,G. Bacquet,Maurice Raimbault,Gustavo Viniegra-González +4 more
TL;DR: A mathematical model was developed and tested to simulate the generation and transfer of heat in solid substrate fermentation (SSF) and it was shown that conduction through the fermentation fixed bed was the main heat transfer resistance.

Recent developments in modeling of solid-state fermentation: heat and mass transfer in bioreactors
TL;DR: The current article reviews these advances, showing how the various transport phenomena have been modeled and discusses the insights that have been achieved through the modeling work and the improvements to models that will be necessary in order to make them even more powerful tools in the optimization of bioreactor performance.

Validation of a model describing two-dimensional heat transfer during solid-state fermentation in packed bed bioreactors.
TL;DR: A two-dimensional heat transfer model was validated against two experimental studies from the literature which describe the growth of Aspergillus niger during solid-state fermentation in packed bed bioreactors and suggested that evaporation can remove as much as 78% of the heat from the bed during times of peak heat generation.

Biochemical Engineering Aspects of Solid State Bioprocessing
TL;DR: This review presents the current state of understanding of biochemical engineering aspects of SSF processing, including not only the fermentation itself, but also the auxiliary steps of substrate and inoculum preparation and downstream processing and waste disposal.

Predictions of growth for Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella during fluctuating temperature
TL;DR: Predictive performance of a dynamic modelling approach combined with predictions from the Food MicroModel software applied to the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella in pasteurised milk, chicken liver pâté and minced chicken under constant as well as fluctuating temperatures was found.
