We present a simple higher dimensional FRW-type of model where the acceleration is apparently caused by the presence of the extra dimensions. Assuming an ansatz in the form of the deceleration parameter, we get a class of solutions some of which shows the desirable feature of dimensional reduction as well as reasonably good physical properties of matter. Interestingly we do not have to invoke an extraneous scalar field or a cosmological constant to account for this acceleration. One argues that the terms containing the higher dimensional metric coefficients produces an extra negative pressure that apparently drives the inflation of the 4D space with an accelerating phase. It is further found that in line with the physical requirements our model admits of a decelerating phase in the early era along with an accelerating phase at present. Further the models asymptotically mimic a steady-state-type of universe although it starts from a big-bang-type of singularity. Correspondence to Wesson's induced matter theory is also briefly discussed and, in line with it, it is argued that the terms containing the higher dimensional metric coefficients apparently creates a negative pressure which drives the inflation of the 3-space with an accelerating phase.read more

Accelerating Universe as Window for Extra Dimensions
TL;DR: In this article, Mohammedi et al. presented homogeneous cosmological solutions in five-dimensional space-time assuming equations of state p = kp and p(1) = gamma p where p is the isotropic 3-pressure and p (1) is the effective negative pressure for the inflation.

Spherically symmetric inhomogeneous model with Chaplygin gas
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the late time acceleration with a Chaplygin type of gas in spherically symmetric inhomogeneous model and calculated the deceleration parameter for this anisotropic model, which, unlike its homogeneous counterpart, shows that the flip is not synchronous occurring early at the outer shells.

Accelerating universe from an evolving Λ in higher dimension
TL;DR: In this article, exact solutions in 5D inhomogeneous matter dominated model with a varying cosmological constant were found, and an initial decelerating model was found to give late acceleration in conformity with the current observational demands.

Phantom cosmology with a decaying cosmological function Λ(t) induced from five-dimensional (5D) geometric vacuum
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce a variable cosmological function Λ(t) in a geometrical manner from a 5D Riemann-flat metric, and investigate the possibility of having a geometric criterion to choose a suitable function for every 4D dynamical hypersurface capable of generating phantom cosmologies.

General relativistic plasma in higher dimensional spacetime
TL;DR: In this paper, the (3+1) decomposition of Thorne and Macdonald is invoked to write down the Einstein-Maxwell equations generalized to (d+ 1) dimensions and also to formulate the plasma equations in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker-like spacetime in higher dimensions.

Phantom Energy: Dark Energy with w< 1 Causes a Cosmic Doomsday
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the consequences that follow if the dark energy is phantom energy, in which the sum of the pressure and energy density is negative, and the positive phantom energy density becomes infinite in finite time, overcoming all other forms of matter, such that the gravitational repulsion rapidly brings our brief epoch of cosmic structure to a close.

Quintessence and the Rest of the World: Suppressing Long-Range Interactions
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the possibility that an approximate global symmetry serves to suppress such couplings even further, allowing a coupling of a nearly massless, slowly rolling scalar field to the pseudoscalar of electromagnetism, which would rotate the polarization state of radiation from distant sources.
