Abstract
Achromatic half-wave and quarter-wave retarders are com- monly produced by combining two plates of different birefringent materi- als with properly chosen thicknesses. A theoretical analysis is presented leading to a systematic procedure for choosing a combination of materi- als that minimizes the residual variation of the retardation with wave- length. This analysis also shows how the residual variation of the retar- dation with wavelength can be almost completely eliminated with a combination of three birefringent materials. © 1996 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Terahertz achromatic quarter-wave plate

TL;DR: This achromatic wave plate demonstrates a huge frequency bandwidth (upsilonmax/upsilonmin approximately 7), and therefore can be applied to terahertz time domain spectroscopy and polarimetry.

Multi-twist retarders: broadband retardation control using self-aligning reactive liquid crystal layers.

TL;DR: This work employs a numerical design method and focuses on achromatic quarter- and half-wave MTRs, which offer remarkably effective control of broadband polarization transformation and can easily achieve large bandwidth and/or low-variation of retardation within visible through infrared wavelengths.

The four-quadrant phase-mask coronagraph : white light laboratory results with an achromatic device

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of the four-quadrant phase mask coronagraph (FQPM) over a broadband wavelength range (R≈2) was evaluated using a two stage stack of Quartz and MgF_2.

Optimal broadband Mueller matrix ellipsometer using multi-waveplates with flexibly oriented axes

TL;DR: In this paper, a general composite waveplate (GCW) is proposed to combine multiple waveplates with flexibly oriented axes as a polarization modulating component in the Mueller matrix ellipsometer (MME).

Negative dispersion of birefringence in two-dimensionally self-organized smectic liquid crystal and monomer thin film

TL;DR: Using the proposed method, the ND of birefringence could be obtained in a single layer, which is desirable for thin flexible applications.

Achromatic retarders using quartz and mica

TL;DR: In this paper, an inexpensive design for an achromatic retarder using quartz and mica is described, and two plates of different birefringent materials with properly chosen thicknesses can be combined.
