Anticancer activities of constituents of kava (Piper methysticum)
TLDR
Crude extracts of kava showed good activity against ovarian tumour and leukaemia cancer cell lines and the structure of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques and by comparison with data in the literature.Abstract:
Crude extracts of kava (Piper methysticum G. Forster, Piperaceae) showed good activity against ovarian tumour and leukaemia cancer cell lines. Bioassay-guided isolation resulted in the isolation of six known kava lactones and two flavokavains. The structure of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques and by comparison with data in the literature.read more

Anticancer principles from medicinal piper ( hú jiāo) plants.
TL;DR: Piplartine (piperlongumine) shows the most promise, being toxic to dozens of cancer cell lines and having excellent in vivo activity, and it is worthwhile to conduct further anticancer studies both in vitro and in vivo on Piper plants and their active principles.

Flavokawain A, a Novel Chalcone from Kava Extract, Induces Apoptosis in Bladder Cancer Cells by Involvement of Bax Protein-Dependent and Mitochondria-Dependent Apoptotic Pathway and Suppresses Tumor Growth in Mice
Xiaolin Zi,Anne R. Simoneau +1 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that flavokawain A may have a dual efficacy in induction of apoptosis preferentially in bladder tumors, and down-regulates the expression of X-linked inhibitor of suicides and survivin.
