TLDR
The Kim and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists criteria are more accurate than the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound criteria and are recommended for achieving high specificity.Abstract:
OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to compare the results with three sets of guidelines for fine-needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid nodules.MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 1,398 nodules confirmed with fine-needle aspiration biopsy or surgery were included in the study. We compared the diagnostic value of three sets of guidelines for ultrasound findings that should lead to fine-needle aspiration biopsy of a nodule. According to the Kim criteria, a nodule should have at least one of the following findings: marked hypoechogenicity, irregular or microlobulated margins, microcalcifications, or length greater than width. According to the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, biopsy should be performed on a nodule 1 cm in diameter or larger with microcalcifications, 1.5 cm in diameter or larger that is solid or has coarse calcifications, and 2 cm in diameter or larger that has mixed solid and cystic components, and a nodule that has undergone substantial growth or is associated with abnormal cervical l...read more

TL;DR: The present document updates previous guidelines released in 2006 and 2010 and states that percutaneous ethanol injection should be the first-line treatment option for relapsing, benign cystic lesions, while US-guided thermal ablation treatments may be considered for solid or mixed symptomatic benign thyroid nodules.

TL;DR: The initial portion of this project was aimed at standardizing the diagnostic approach to thyroid nodules with regard to terminology through the development of a lexicon, and the consensus process and the resultant lexicon are described.

TL;DR: Vascularity itself or a combination of vascularity and gray-scale US features was not as useful as the use of suspicious gray- scale US features alone for predicting thyroid malignancy.

TL;DR: Thyroid ultrasound imaging could be used to identify patients who have a low risk of cancer for whom biopsy could be deferred and adoption of this more stringent rule requiring 2 abnormal nodule characteristics to prompt biopsy would reduce unnecessary biopsies by 90% while maintaining a lowrisk of cancer.

TL;DR: The aim of the study was to correlate the sonographic and color-Doppler findings with the results of US-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy and of pathologic staging of resected carcinomas to establish the relative importance of US features as risk factors of malignancy and a cost-effective management of nonpalpable thyroid nodules.

TL;DR: Considering the high level of sensitivity of the proposed sonographic classification, fine-needle aspiration biopsy should be performed on thyroid nodules classified as positive, regardless of palpability.
