Calbindin-D28K-containing neurons in animal models of neurodegeneration: possible protection from excitotoxicity

TLDR
The presence of CaBP28K may protect neurons from calcium-mediated neurotoxicity, and Immunocytochemical characterization of the substantia nigra of the MPTP-treated mice revealed that there was significant dopaminergic cell loss in this brain area after MPTP treatment.

The role of excitotoxicity in neurodegenerative disease: implications for therapy.

TL;DR: There now seems to be little doubt that such a process is indeed a determining factor in the extent of the lesions observed, and direct evidence for a pathogenic role for excitotoxicity in neurological disease is missing.
Journal ArticleDOI

The role of neuronal growth factors in neurodegenerative disorders of the human brain

TL;DR: The role members of the nerve growth factor family (NGF, BDNF and NT-3) and trk receptors as well as additional growth factors (GDNF, TGF-alpha and IGF-I) may play in neurodegenerative disorders of the human brain are examined.

The relevance of iron in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease.

TL;DR: In this article, a host of putative mechanisms that might contribute to the pathogenesis underlying the characteristic degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cultured hippocampal neurons show responses to BDNF, NT-3, and NT-4, but not NGF

TL;DR: The results suggest that several of the neurotrophins have important effects in the differentiation and maintenance of function of subpopulations of hippocampal neurons.

The role of calcium‐binding proteins in selective motoneuron vulnerability in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated whether calcium-binding proteins contribute to selective motoneuron vulnerability in ALS, and compared calbindin-D28K and parvalbumin immunoreactivity in motoneur populations in human ALS and in a ventral spinal cord hybrid cell line selectively vulnerable to the cytotoxic effects of ALS IgG.

Protein Measurement with the Folin Phenol Reagent

TL;DR: Procedures are described for measuring protein in solution or after precipitation with acids or other agents, and for the determination of as little as 0.2 gamma of protein.

Single-step method of RNA isolation by acid guanidinium thiocyanate-phenol-chloroform extraction

TL;DR: A new method of total RNA isolation by a single extraction with an acid guanidinium thiocyanate-phenol-chloroform mixture is described, providing a pure preparation of undegraded RNA in high yield and can be completed within 4 h.

Hybridization of denatured RNA and small DNA fragments transferred to nitrocellulose.

TL;DR: A simple and rapid method for transferring RNA from agarose gels to nitrocellulose paper for blot hybridization has been developed, allowing removal of the hybridized probes and rehybridization of the RNA blots without loss of sensitivity.

Purification of Biologically Active Globin Messenger RNA by Chromatography on Oligothymidylic acid-Cellulose

TL;DR: A convenient technique for the partial purification of large quantities of functional, poly(adenylic acid)-rich mRNA is described and should prove generally useful as an initial step in the isolation of specific mRNAs.
