Fundamentals and advances in magnesium alloy corrosion

TL;DR: There remains growing interest in magnesium (Mg) and its alloys, as they are the lightest structural metallic materials Mg alloys have the potential to enable design of lighter engineered systems, including positive implications for reduced energy consumption as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biomedical coatings on magnesium alloys - a review.

TL;DR: The analysis of the literature showed that many studies have focused on calcium phosphate coatings produced either using conversion or deposition methods which were developed for orthopaedic applications, however, the control of phases and the formation of cracks still appear unsatisfactory.

Recent Progress in Corrosion and Protection of Magnesium Alloys

TL;DR: The Cooperative Research Centre for Cast Metals Manufacturing (CAST) in Australia is one of the most active research organizations in the world established to cope with the problems associated with the development and application of advanced light metals.

Measurement of the corrosion rate of magnesium alloys using Tafel extrapolation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the recent literature to further examine the electrochemical measurement hypothesis for Mg and found that the corrosion of Mg alloys can be adequately estimated using Tafel extrapolation of the polarisation curve.

Biodegradable magnesium alloys for orthopaedic applications: A review on corrosion, biocompatibility and surface modifications

TL;DR: It was found that inclusion of alloying elements such as Al, Mn, Ca, Zn and rare earth elements provides improved corrosion resistance to Mg alloys and surface modification is a promising approach to improve the performance of Mg-based biomaterials for orthopaedic applications.

The electrochemical corrosion of pure magnesium in 1 N NaCl

TL;DR: An electrochemical investigation was carried out to study the corrosion of pure magnesium in 1 N NaCl at different pH values involving electrochemical polarisation, scanning tunnel microscopy (STM), measurement of hydrogen gas evolution and measurement of the elements dissolved from the magnesium specimen which were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry (ICPAES) as discussed by the authors.

The Role of Mg17Al12 Phase in the Corrosion of Mg Alloy AZ91

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the corrosion behavior of mold-cast Mg alloy AZ91 in as-cast (F), homogenized (T4), and artificially-aged (T6) conditions in chloride media.
