Early indicators of prognosis in fulminant hepatic failure
TLDR
The successful use of orthotopic liver transplants in fulminant hepatic failure has created a need for early prognostic indicators to select the patients most likely to benefit at a time when liver transplantation is still feasible.About:

TL;DR: The primary aim was to compare presenting clinical features and liver transplantation in patients with acute liver failure related to acetaminophen hepatotoxicity, other drugs, indeterminate factors, and other causes.

TL;DR: In conclusion, acetaminophen hepatotoxicity far exceeds other causes of acute liver failure in the United States, and education of patients, physicians, and pharmacies to limit high‐risk use settings is recommended.

AASLD position paper : the management of acute liver failure

TL;DR: This document has been designated as a Position Paper, since the topic contains more data based on expert opinion than on randomized controlled trials and is thus not considered to have the emphasis and certainty of a Practice Guideline.
Journal ArticleDOI
AASLD practice guidelines: Evaluation of the patient for liver transplantation
TL;DR: Intended for use by physicians, these recommendations suggest preferred approaches to the diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive aspects of care to be flexible, in contrast to standards of care, which are inflexible policies to be followed in every case.

TL;DR: Whether or not the Australia antigen represents a virus remains to be established; nonetheless, identification of this antigen in the serum of hepatitis patients constitutes a fascinating development that may, hopefully, presage eradication of transfusion-induced hepatitis.

Controlled trials of charcoal hemoperfusion and prognostic factors in fulminant hepatic failure.
TL;DR: There was in both trials a significant relationship between survival and etiology quite independent of the use or duration of hemoperfusion, except in the non-A, non-B hepatitis and halothane or drug reaction subgroups, which had a high mortality throughout.

TL;DR: In patients with fulminant hepatitis B, the absence of HBsAg in serum as detected by radioimmunoassay has an independent, favorable prognostic value and is significantly higher than the survival rate observed in the 94 HBs Ag‐positive patients.

TL;DR: Orthotopic liver transplantation was done in 17 patients with fulminant hepatitis and 5 died: 2 of early liver failure due to the poor quality of the graft, 1 presumably of accidentally transmitted acute infection with the human immunodeficiency virus, and 2 of decerebration occurring during or immediately after surgery.
