TLDR
In this paper, the authors review recent theoretical progress in understanding physical processes of composite effects on enhanced third-order nonlinear optical responses of various kinds of the recently proposed non-linear optical materials, namely, colloidal nanocrystals with inhomogeneous metallodielectric particles or a graded-index host, metallic films with inhmogeneous microstructures adjusted by ion doping or temperature gradient, composites with compositional gradation or graded particles.

Size confinement and origins of two-photon absorption and refraction in CdSe quantum dots.

TL;DR: In this work, CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with various sizes were successfully prepared, and their size-confined third-order nonlinear optical properties were investigated by Z-scan technique with 100 fs laser pulses at 800 nm wavelength.
