The majority of neutral glycolipids present in plasma membranes are cryptic, and further extensive studies of the organization of glycolIPid in other eukaryotic cell membranes are necessary.Abstract:
The idea that glycosphingolipids (or, briefly, glycolipids) are ubiquitous components of plasma membrane and display cell type-specific patterns perhaps stemmed from the classical studies on glycolipids of erythrocyte membranes.(1,2) Subsequently, plasma membranes of various animal cells were successfully isolated and analyzed; all were characterized by their much higher content of glycolipid than was found in intracellular membranes.(3–8) It is generally assumed that glycolipids are present at the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane bilayer, although this assumption is based only on experiments with surface-labeling by galactose oxidase-NaB[3H]4 of intact and lysed erythrocyte membranes and inside-out vesicles.(9,10) Obviously, further extensive studies of the organization of glycolipid in other eukaryotic cell membranes are necessary. Interestingly, the majority of neutral glycolipids present in plasma membranes are cryptic (see Section 4.2.1).read more

Impaired hippocampal long-term potentiation and failure of learning in β1,4-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase gene transgenic mice
Kotaro Ikarashi,Hiroki Fujiwara,Yoshihiko Yamazaki,Jun Ichi Goto,Kenya Kaneko,Hiroshi Kato,Satoshi Fujii,Hiroshi Sasaki,Satoshi Fukumoto,Keiko Furukawa,Hatsue Waki,Koichi Furukawa +11 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the overexpression of β1,4 GalNAc-T resulted in altered synaptic plasticity of LTP and DP in hippocampal CA1 neurons and learning in the 4PTT, and this is attributable to the shift from b-pathway gangliosides to a- Pathway gangLiosides.

Discrimination of human dorsal root ganglion cells by anti-fucosyl GM1 antibody
TL;DR: Immunohistochemical discrimination of neurons in human dorsal root ganglia by the anti-fucosyl GM1 antibody may give an important clue to the functional identification of neurons conveying different modalities of sensation.

Migration and aggregation of embryonic chicken neurons in vitro: possible functional implication of polysialogangliosides
Christian Greis,Harald Rösner +1 more
TL;DR: A primary culture system of embryonic chicken optic lobe neurons was used, which turned out to be a suitable model for cell migration and aggregation, and results suggest a functional implication of c-polysialogangliosides in neuronal fasciculation, Migration and aggregation.

Variants of BAlB/c 3T3 cells lacking complex gangliosides retain a fibronectin matrix and spread normally on fibronectin-coated substrates
TL;DR: The results clearly demonstrate that complex gangliosides are not essential for retention of a fibronectin matrix or for spreading on fibronsectin- coated substrates.

Heart muscle cells share common neutral glycosphingolipids with Trypanosoma cruzi.
Alane Beatriz Vermelho,Maria de Nazareth Leal de Meirelles,Mirian Claudia de Souza Pereira,Gottfried Pohlentz,Eliana Barreto-Bergter +4 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Trypanosoma cruzi and heart muscle cells have similar glycosphingolipid structures and immunoreactive glycolipids, and these cross-reactive antigens could be involved in the Chagasic autoimmunity.
