TLDR
It has been shown that lactate inhibits growth after the log phase and that the maintenance of low lactate concentrations after this point permits higher specific growth rates and higher maximum cell concentrations.
Abstract
Growth and lactic acid production by L. delbrueckii was studied in a dialysis culture system and the inhibitory effect of lactate confirmed by removing lactate from the culture medium by dialysis. It has been shown that lactate inhibits growth after the log phase and that the maintenance of low lactate concentrations after this point permits higher specific growth rates and higher maximum cell concentrations. Acid production is also significantly higher in a dialysis culture system. Finally, a modification of the Luedeking‐Piret model, incorporating the lactate inhibition effect, is proposed.

Influence of end-products inhibition and nutrient limitations on the growth of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis

TL;DR: In the experimental conditions used in this study, growth inhibition was predominantly due to phenomena other than lactate inhibition and nutritional limitations, and hence associated with unidentified compounds produced in the fermentation.

Propriétés acidifiantes des bactéries lactiques thermophiles en relation avec la fabrication du yoghourt

TL;DR: The acidification du lait résulte généralement de l'action of deux bactéries thermiques thermophiles, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus as mentioned in this paper.

Stimulation of the rate of l-lactate fermentation using Lactococcus lactis IO-1 by periodic electrodialysis

TL;DR: The maximum productivity of this novel system was about two-fold that of the ordinary built-in electrodialysis system even when the lactate concentration in broth was higher than in the ED-MF.

Production of L‐lactic acid by Lactobacillus delbrueckii in chemostat culture using an ion exchange resins system

TL;DR: In this paper, a continuous fermenter-ion exchange resins system was investigated and compared with that observed in a conventional chemostat, which enhanced the fermentation, controlled the pH, and showed the remarkable effect of increasing the yields of lactic acid from beet molasses and biomass from sucrose due to the complete utilization of sucrose.

Urocanic acid production using whole cells immobilized in a hollow fiber reactor

TL;DR: The feasibility of using hollow fiber membrane dialyzers (C‐DAK) for immobilization of microbial whole cells was investigated, and it was found that the reaction was not likely to be diffusion limited, and such a cell immobilization scheme is convenient and workable for continuous production of biochemicals.

Limiting factors in the lactic fermentation

TL;DR: A microscopic count was used in order to avoid as far as possible the error introduced into the plate method by the tendency of the lactic streptococci to grow in pairs and chains.

Dialysis Fermentor Systems for Concentrated Culture of Microorganisms.

TL;DR: Cell-mass production of Serratia marcescens was studied in dialysis systems in which growth was managed in a fermentor remote from, but connected by conduits and pumps with, a nutrient reservoir, believed to be adaptable to any desired scale of size.

Penicillin production in corn steep media with continuous carbohydrate addition.

TL;DR: The work reported here presents the results of an investigation into the replacement of lactose by glucose or by sucrose in a corn steep liquor medium for the production of penicillin.
