TLDR
In this paper, the nitrogen oxides (NO2 and NO) inhibited apparent photosynthesis of oats and alfalfa at concentrations below those required to cause visible injury, and there appeared to be a threshold concentration of about 0.6 ppm for each pollutant.

The effect of air pollutants on physiological processes in plants

TL;DR: A wide range in sensitivity of photosynthesis both within and between species is evident from the literature for the pollutants sulphur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxide and hydrogen fluoride as mentioned in this paper, but much of this variation is in response to differences in environmental conditions both prior to and during fumigation.
Journal ArticleDOI

In Posidonia oceanica cadmium induces changes in DNA methylation and chromatin patterning

TL;DR: The data demonstrate that Cd perturbs the DNA methylation status through the involvement of a specific methyltransferase, linked to nuclear chromatin reconfiguration likely to establish a new balance of expressed/repressed chromatin.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nitric oxide as a bioactive signalling molecule in plant stress responses

TL;DR: This review is focused mainly on the essential role of NO in plant signalling network, leading to the expression of defence response genes under various stress conditions and its ability to directly interact with other molecules and signals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nitric oxide production in tobacco leaf cells: a generalized stress response?

TL;DR: Nicotiana plumbaginifolia cell suspensions expressing the calcium reporter aequorin provided evidence that, under hyperosmotic stress, NO participates in the elevation of free Ca 2+ + + in the cytoplasm.
Journal ArticleDOI

Role of nitric oxide in tolerance of plants to abiotic stress.

TL;DR: Investigations suggest that NO, itself, possesses antioxidant properties and might act as a signal in activating ROS-scavenging enzyme activities under abiotic stress.

Ozone. Effect on apparent photosynthesis, rate of transpiration, and stomatal closure in plants

TL;DR: Ozone induced partial stomatal closure and a reduction in apparent photosynthesis and transpiration in plants as mentioned in this paper, but the effect was reversible and plants frequently recovered within a few hours.
Journal ArticleDOI

Electron spin resonance of iron-nitric oxide complexes with amino acids, peptides and proteins

TL;DR: Electron spin resonance is used to study the complexes formed in the reaction of ferrous ions and nitric oxide with amino acids, peptides and a variety of proteins to elucidate the structure of the protein complexes.

Suppression of Plant Growth by Nitrogen Dioxide

O. C. Taylor, +1 more
- 01 Jan 1966 -
TL;DR: Although the same physiological age leaf tissue was damaged by both toxicants, damage caused by NO(2) was unlike that caused by ozone.
Journal ArticleDOI

Light and dark reduction of nitrite in a reconstituted enzymic system

TL;DR: The reduction of nitrite to ammonia by marrow leaf enzymes occurs with reduced benzyl viologen alone or in catalytic amounts with DPNH, but not with TPNH or DPNh in the absence of the dye.
