TLDR
State-of-the-art information on resistance in insect vectors of disease is reviewed and new strategies to develop novel strategies with which to truly manage resistance are proposed.Abstract:
▪ Abstract Insecticide resistance is an increasing problem in many insect vectors of disease Our knowledge of the basic mechanisms underlying resistance to commonly used insecticides is well established Molecular techniques have recently allowed us to start and dissect most of these mechanisms at the DNA level The next major challenge will be to use this molecular understanding of resistance to develop novel strategies with which we can truly manage resistance State-of-the-art information on resistance in insect vectors of disease is reviewed in this contextread more

Structure, function and evolution of glutathione transferases: implications for classification of non-mammalian members of an ancient enzyme superfamily.
TL;DR: Non-mammalian GSTs have been much less well characterized, but have provided a disproportionately large number of three-dimensional structures, thus extending the authors' knowledge of glutathione transferases in mammals.

Chemical Pesticides and Human Health: The Urgent Need for a New Concept in Agriculture.
P. Nicolopoulou-Stamati,Sotirios Maipas,Chrysanthi Kotampasi,Panagiotis J. Stamatis,Luc Hens +4 more
TL;DR: It is more obvious than ever that the society needs the implementation of a new agricultural concept regarding food production, which is safer for man and the environment, and to this end, steps such as the declaration of Nyéléni have been taken.

The genetic causes of convergent evolution.
TL;DR: Evidence for parallel and collateral evolution has been found in many taxa, and an emerging hypothesis is that they result from the fact that mutations in some genetic targets minimize pleiotropic effects while simultaneously maximizing adaptation.

Reducing Plasmodium falciparum Malaria Transmission in Africa: A Model-Based Evaluation of Intervention Strategies

TL;DR: Interventions using current tools can result in major reductions in P. falciparum malaria transmission and the associated disease burden in Africa, although considerable reductions in prevalence can be achieved with existing tools and realistic coverage levels.

Essential oils for the development of eco-friendly mosquito larvicides: A review
TL;DR: This review evaluated the current research on using EOs as potential larvicides based on their chemical composition and biological efficacy, and found that more than 2/3 of the plants were from only 5 families: Lamiaceae, Cupressaceae, Rutaceae, Apiaceae, and Myrtaceae.

Molecular characterization of pyrethroid knockdown resistance (kdr) in the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae s. s.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates that a modification of the voltage‐gated sodium channel protein recently shown to be associated with mutations of the para‐type sodium channel gene is present in certain strains of pyrethroid resistant A. gambiae, and describes a PCR‐based diagnostic test allowing its detection in the genome of single mosquitoes.

Identification of mutations in the housefly para-type sodium channel gene associated with knockdown resistance (kdr) to pyrethroid insecticides
TL;DR: Comparative sequence analysis of housefly strains carrying kdr or the more potentsuper-kdr factor revealed two amino acid mutations that correlate with these resistance phenotypes, and suggest a binding site for pyrethroids at the intracellular mouth of the channel pore in a region known to be important for channel inactivation.

Neurotoxic actions of pyrethroid insecticides
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that pyrethroids can alter neuronal excitability through an action on voltage-sensitive channels other than the sodium channel, which is likely to be the principal site of pyrethroid action.

Resistance-associated point mutations in insecticide-insensitive acetylcholinesterase
TL;DR: The sequence analysis of the Ace gene in several resistant field strains of Drosophila melanogaster resulted in the identification of five point mutations associated with reduced sensitivities to insecticides, suggesting that recombination between resistant alleles preexisting in natural populations is a mechanism by which insects rapidly adapt to new selective pressures.

Status of pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato
TL;DR: The present study confirms the presence of pyrethroid resistance among Anopheles gambiae s.l mosquitos in Côte d'Ivoire and reports the observation of such resistance in two other countries in West Africa (Benin and Burkina Faso).
