Interfaces for high speed fiber-optic links: analysis and experiment

TLDR
In this paper, an analysis of directly and externally modulated fiber-optic links is presented, based on the signal flow diagram of the interface circuits to the laser diode, Mach-Zehnder electrooptic modulator, and p-i-n photodiode.

A low-loss downconverting analog fiber-optic link

TL;DR: In this article, an analog fiber-optic link for concurrent detection and downconversion of microwave signals is reported, where optical amplification is employed in conjunction with electrical power combining of photodetectors to demonstrate link losses of 19.6 and 22.9 dB at RF carrier frequencies of 9 and 16 GHz, respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI

Maximum dynamic range operation of a microwave external modulation fiber-optic link

TL;DR: In this article, the analog performance of an external modulation fiber-optic link was analyzed in terms of the microwave scattering matrices of the modulator and detector circuits, and a modulator bias condition was predicted to promote optimum link performance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analog modulation properties of oxide confined VCSELs at microwave frequencies

TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive experimental evaluation of the microwave modulation characteristics of high-speed oxide-confined vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) emitting at 840 nm was performed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Silicon RF-Photonic Filter and Down-Converter

TL;DR: In this article, an RF-photonic filter and down-converter system based on a compact and fully tunable silicon optical filter has been demonstrated and analyzed, where the frequency down-Conversion process is operated in a low-IF mode to avoid laser low frequency noises.
Journal ArticleDOI

Improving thermal stability of opto-electronic oscillators

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an overview of close-in carrier phase noise and temperature stability of various oscillators in microwave systems, using acoustic, electromagnetic, and optical technologies.

Probability, random variables, and stochastic processes

TL;DR: In this paper, the meaning of probability and random variables are discussed, as well as the axioms of probability, and the concept of a random variable and repeated trials are discussed.

Theoretical limitations on the broadband matching of arbitrary impedances

TL;DR: In this article, the authors considered the problem of matching an arbitrary load impedance to a pure resistance by means of a reactive network and derived necessary and sufficient conditions for the physical realizability of a function of frequency representing the input reflection coefficient of a matching network terminated in a prescribed load impedance.
Journal ArticleDOI

System characteristics of direct modulated and externally modulated RF fiber-optic links

TL;DR: The performance of direct and external modulation fiber-optic links in terms of the performance parameters that are used to describe the terminal properties of other RF components such as loss, signal-to-noise, linearity, and dynamics is detailed.
