Investigation of a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna excited with a higher order mode

Abstract: The higher order resonant mode (HEM12δ), in a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) has been investigated in regards to using it for practical purposes. In this paper, we have addressed the effect of the dielectric permittivity and other antenna parameters on the impedance and radiation characteristics. The HEM12δ mode is excited using a non resonating microstrip patch.

Abstract: A cross slot coupled cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) operating in the X-band (8GHz -12GHz) frequency range is studied. The proposed CP designs are achieved by implementing a suitable cross slot on the ground plane (in the case of aperture coupled feed method), which results in excitation of two near degenerate orthogonal modes of near equal amplitudes and 90 ° phase difference. Attempts are made to change the geometry of slots ends to introduce a novel structure in order to achieve a better impedance bandwidth with an improved 3dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. It is found that the hourglass of cross slot has a great effect on the strength of coupling between the feed line and the dielectric resonator antenna. In simulation an impedance bandwidth of 46.15% and axial ratio bandwidth of 22% has been achieved with the above geometry. An improvement of 12% in impedance bandwidth and 11.2% in Axial ratio bandwidth is obtained over conventional rectangular cross slot. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i6.6484

Abstract: An experimental investigation of the radiation and circuit properties of a resonant cylindrical dielectric cavity antenna has been undertaken. The radiation patterns and input impedance have been measured for structures of various geometrical aspect ratios, dielectric constants, and sizes of coaxial feed probes. A simple theory utilizing the magnetic wall boundary condition is shown to correlate well with measured results for radiation patterns and resonant frequencies.

Abstract: Electric- and magnetic-field patterns for five of the lowest resonant modes in cylindrical dielectic resonators are displayed in various planes of intersection. The computational procedure is based on a method moments solution of the surface integral equation for bodies of revolution. Improvement of the numerical stability through the normalization of the matrix is discussed, and an algorithm for the evaluation of the modal field components is described.

Abstract: A resonant mode (HEM12δ), other than those ( HEM11δ and TM01δ) conventionally excited and used in a cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) has been examined with a view for using it as another radiating mode with broadside radiation patterns. Excitation of the mode, being the most challenging aspect, has been discussed and resolved by employing an innovative technique. The proposed concept has been successfully verified and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. More than 8-dBi peak gain with excellent broadside radiation has been obtained from a prototype shaped from a commercially available low-loss dielectric material with relative permittivity 10.

Abstract: Equivalent surface currents obtained from the solution of a surface integral equation model for a dielectric resonator are utilized to evaluate the electric and magnetic fields inside and outside of the isolated dielectric resonator. The resulting field plots permit a positive mode identification, and they are useful in designing devices to enhance coupling of or to suppress various modes.
