Three-dimensional switching field measurements performed on a 3 nm cobalt cluster embedded in a niobium matrix are reported, able to separate the different magnetic anisotropy contributions and evidence the dominating role of the cluster surface.Abstract:
Using a new micro-SQUID setup, we investigate magnetic anisotropy in a single 1000-atom cobalt cluster. This system opens new fields in the characterization and understanding of the origin of magnetic anisotropy in such nanoparticles. For this purpose, we report three-dimensional switching field measurements performed on a 3 nm cobalt cluster embedded in a niobium matrix. We are able to separate the different magnetic anisotropy contributions and evidence the dominating role of the cluster surface.read more

Spin polarization and charge transfer of Co nanoclusters coated with CO molecules
Chulsu Jo,Jae Il Lee +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the magnetic properties of Co clusters coated with CO molecules were investigated by first-principles density functional calculations and it was shown that spin polarization increases as CO molecules are adsorbed on the most stable sites of Co cluster, which is caused by the increased local spin polarization due to charge transfer from Co clusters to CO molecules.

Effects of dimensionality and spatial distribution on the magnetic relaxation of interacting ferromagnetic nanoclusters: A Monte Carlo study
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the magnetization dynamics of one- or two-dimensional self-organized assemblies of interacting nanoclusters, which are potential candidates for ultra-high density magnetic recording media, using Monte Carlo simulations.
