TLDR
The use of point-of-care transfusion and coagulation management algorithms guided by viscoelastic tests based on first-line therapy with fibrinogen and prothrombin complex concentrate have been associated with reduced allogeneic blood transfusion requirements, reduced incidence of thrombotic/thromboembolic and transfusion-related adverse events, and improved outcomes in cardiac surgery.

Platelet Function tests: A Comparative Review

TL;DR: Well-tried and innovative platelet function tests and their methodological features and clinical applications are considered and different platelet methodologies for the evaluation of inherited and acquired bleeding disorders and for monitoring antiplatelet therapies are spreading.
Journal ArticleDOI

Point-of-care thromboelastography/thromboelastometry-based coagulation management in cardiac surgery: a meta-analysis of 8332 patients.

TL;DR: TEG/ROTEM-based coagulation management decreases the risk of allogeneic blood product exposure after cardiac surgery and results in significantly lower re-exploration rate, decreased incidence of postoperative AKI, and thromboembolic events in cardiac surgery patients.
Journal ArticleDOI

Disorders of coagulation in pregnancy.

TL;DR: Some of the more common disorders of coagulation that occur during pregnancy are examined, including von Willebrand disease, common factor deficiencies, platelet disorders, the parturient on anticoagulants, and the more rare acute fatty liver of pregnancy, with a focus on their implications for neuraxial anaesthesia.

Duration of red-cell storage and complications after cardiac surgery

TL;DR: In patients undergoing cardiac surgery, transfusion of red cells that had been stored for more than 2 weeks was associated with a significantly increased risk of postoperative complications as well as reduced short-term and long-term survival.
Journal ArticleDOI

Increased Mortality, Postoperative Morbidity, and Cost After Red Blood Cell Transfusion in Patients Having Cardiac Surgery

TL;DR: Red blood cell transfusion in patients having cardiac surgery is strongly associated with both infection and ischemic postoperative morbidity, hospital stay, increased early and late mortality, and hospital costs.
Reference EntryDOI

Anti-fibrinolytic use for minimising perioperative allogeneic blood transfusion

TL;DR: Data from the head-to-head trials suggest an advantage of aprotinin over the lysine analogues TXA and EACA in terms of reducing perioperative blood loss, but the differences were small.
