Measuring forces with the AFM: polymeric surfaces in liquids.

TL;DR: Results indicate that forces between the surfaces reviewed here are a complicated mixture of steric-type repulsion, conformational behaviour on separation and long-range attraction, which is often ascribed to 'hydrophobic' forces.

Surface properties of tetra(ethylene oxide)dodecyl amide compared with poly(ethylene oxide) surfactants. 1. Effect of the headgroup on adsorption

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the performance of tetra(ethylene oxide) n-dodecyl amide (TEDAd) with poly(e o n-alkyl ethers C12E5, C 10E5 and C 12E4, and found that the amide group is more hydrophilic than the ethylene oxide group, raising the cloud point and critical micelle concentration.

Application of Double-Layer Theories to the Extensive Crystalline Swelling of Li-Montmorillonite

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the Poisson−Boltzmann (PB) theory and DLVO double-layer theory together with the hypernetted chain formalism based on the primitive model for electrolyte solutions to examine recently published results for extensive crystalline swelling of Li-montmorillonite as revealed by d(001) spacings over the pressure range 0.05−0.9 MPa and the concentration range 1−10-4 M LiCl.

Surface Potential Dependence of the Hamaker Constant

TL;DR: In this article, a new method for determination of the Hamaker constant was suggested, which can be easily measured through determination of swelling pressure of the material in aqueous solution.
